With the addition of six new tenured faculty members and a visiting professor from MIT, the economics department is embarking on a long-term plan to claim a spot among the top 15 departments in the nation.

Hopkins offers a wonderful quality of life. Also, once again, I encourage students to look at the considerable difference in peer assessment...ie. academic respect...between these two schools. Washington U = 4.1, while JHU=4.6...both out of a 5.0. To me, these numbers are the most important, as schools can manipulate features of the other stats to raise their rankings. The peer assessment is strictly academically driven, and would therefore seem the most valuable determinant of quality of education, and institution respect among graduate schools.

I just can't come to terms with the atmosphere I saw at Hopkins. Also, I have a very smart and capable friend who completed his business major at Hopkins, and is not having such an easy time finding a good job with just his bba. WashU offers a real college campus and academically (as posted above) the prospects as a WashU econ major are only improving.

My D was seriously considering JHU as a non pre-med but ultimately chose WashU because everyone just seems to LOVE WashU and seems so happy there. She thought the JHU campus was beautiful, but just couldn't shake the fear of JHU's reputation of "where fun goes to die". We know a number of people who work and study there and apparently JHU recognizes the problem and is trying to address the issue by admitting more "mainstream" and non pre-med students. So, hopefully things will and are improving.

For my D, there were no risks with WashU. Great school with a great quality of life. It also had the real bonus of flexibility. If she changes her mind about her major, wants to double major, or even wants to switch from Arts & Science to the Business school it's relatively easy to do at WashU.

No...There has been no business major at Hopkins. Just this year, a new major in this area has been established. Perhaps admissions Daniel can further clarify this for you. Hopkins does have, however, a terrific Business and Entrepreneurship minor, which comes out of the engineering school, but is highly recommended for all students with an interest in business. The minor is superb. I know several students, across all disciplines, taking it. Also, I know of a some students who have graduated and gone on to incredible positions in investment banking.

No...I wouldn't. I was considering JHU for a BRIEF time, but realized it really doesn't even compare to WashU, IMO. The quality of life, the study body, and everything that goes with JHU just don't have anything desirable to offer it appears to me when held up against WashU, but that's what I got out of it. I'm sure there are PLENTY of people who find it just fine and really love it there. You just really have to find where you're comfortable and what suits you best.

One of my dearest friends goes to Hopkins, I go to WashU. They're both the perfect schools for each of us. I think in the end you have to listen to your heart and decide which one is right for you.
