Is it good to mention leadership positions held in World Of Warcraft guilds? For instance I am second in command of a guild that is near the top of our server. Would if be a deduction that I play video games alot, or would they overlook that for the leadership experience?

well, if you could somehow incorporate that into your essay, defining what kind of leadership qualities the video game requires, then it would be a plus.

do it. hey, its leadership

I definitely wouldn't put anything WoW-related on your app. It makes them think you have no life. They would prefer that you show leadership in other ways.

Hmm, would saying something along the lines of "I currently hold leadership responsibilities in an online gaming organization" be better?

If you don't have any other ecs, then maybe you could put that. However, WoW definitely wouldn't be my first choice. I doubt all the admissions officers would know what WoW is and you could come off as a no life, as weasel said.

It would not enhance your application.

No .

Well if you could write some INCREDIBLE essay on it and the hard work/effort required to reach that level, then yeah you should go for it. Otherwise, I would stay away.

@jckund

It's not really hard work. It's more like having fun/wasting time. Talking about leveling is a definite no. Leadership, maybe.

Alright, im going to steer clear here. I have a ton of ECs, no reason to risk it.

well if you actually had a job and responsibilities in that guild, such as organizing website, planning, contacting people, i think it'd be alright to write it down. Whats the difference between organizing a guild and working at some part time job? What? that WoW is a video game? but the job you had to do was still work, yet you weren't doing it for the money, you were doing it to help your guildies.

Admissions officers are open to everything. They're looking to construct a heterogenous class, not a homogenous one. As long as the issue is approached appropriately, admissions officers have no reason to penalize you. Considering you're second-in-command, it seems like WoW is a significant subset of who you are. Why would you jeopardize the integrity of your application by hiding yourself? As long as you explain your duties and how it's important to you (in a meaningful way), you have nothing to worry about.

By the way, I don't play WoW, but I used to. It's no different than say, going to church. It's a social environment that allows you to meet new people and do something you love.

Most of the responses thus far have been disgustingly intolerant. It's not like you're doing something illegal. Granted you could do something more productive, but at least you're doing something you loves.

Everyone needs to do something fun. If WoW is your outlet, don't forget to mention it. It makes you seem human, even if that may seem ironic. ;)

I would go for it. I read a short article kinda thing written by somebody who used to be an admissions officer at Princeton lamenting at how the applications he read would lead him to believe that they had cornered the world's supply of saints, and that it's better to just put both feet forward than just one polished, perfect one.

The majority of the people I know at Princeton would assume the OP is a loser with no life. A lot of the people who work in the admissions office are recent Princeton grads, so you can assume they hold the same views. Are these views disgustingly intolerant? Maybe. But there's nothing you can do about it.

People who post on CC are probably more likely to be video game enthusiasts than the broader applicant pool, so the sample of responses you're getting in this thread could be skewed.

I used to be an admin at a major runescape forum we had over 120k members do you think that would be worth putting down? I did stuff with phpbb and moderation among the forums

It would definitely be a departure from your regular stock ECs.

If you decide to list it, do make sure to write about your responsibilities and achievements to show you as an active leader. The trouble with listing WoW in particular is that game has been reported to be extremely addictive to some players. In fact, when kids get into trouble at college with playing online to the detriment of attending class, WoW often takes the blame.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Maybe the admissions person is in your guild, then its a big positive!

LOL. Too bad the admissions are all in the rival guild...

Anyway, it's a leadership, so why not. Just don't list it as an important one. If you got the space, do it, but if it says list your top 5, don't.
