Wow pretty cold George Washington U

From Time's article on college suicides
"In a case study of apparent hamhandedness, Jordan Nott had spent less than 48 hours in the psychiatric ward he checked himself into, in October 2004, when he received a terse letter from George Washington University informing the sophomore that he had been suspended for being a danger to himself and others. "It was a huge slap in the face," says Nott, 20. "They don't hand out this letter that says, 'We want you to get help.' What it says is, 'You've been suspended; you've been barred from campus.'" The letter went on to explain that if he returned to campus, he would be arrested. Rather than contest the suspension, he switched schools and is now suing for compensatory damages. "-Time

And here again is another reason I didn't attend GWU. The school is completely insupportive, like some sort of mega-corporation.

Thought this would be important for next year's applicant and new acceptees off the waitlist to see!

You need move on buddy. Besides, as student at GW, I wouldn't want some crazy kid running around campus. The school probably hadto get rid of the liability in casesomething did possibly happen.

Don't dwell on the past. Tulane's a great school, and I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun there while getting a great education.

YES. Good lord, I don't know how outsiders can judge the administration/school for banning psychos from running around on campus. sorry, but i am very sensitive about this issue; i think it is terrible how the media portrayed the administration..

i was actually stalked by a complete lunatic a couple of years ago... it was a HORRIBLE, horrible situation... I would not have returned to GW if the administration had not convinced me that I would be safe. gw's priority is the welfare of its students (i.e. not allowing a killing spree to happen).

on the other hand, i had a couple of friends at GW who were uber-depressed (but NOT homicidal), and the university was very, very effective in treating them and giving them therapy. they are now healthy, productive individuals.

the kid who is suing obviously had to be completely PSYCHO for them to kick him out of school; gw does NOT kick "depressed" people out, they kick PSYCHOS out. i would hope that tulane would do the same; i don't want you getting chopped up at the middle of the night by an ax-wielding psycho.

I don't know how people can criticize the GW administration. i have been to several schools and i have never met any administration that is as willing to bend over backwards for its students as GW. seriously, people, you are not gonna get more caring, effective individuals looking out for you. i have met some great friends at the university and i also have met some not-so-great people, but one of the things i will always appreciate is the exceptional administration.

i am SO glad that armcp won't be my classmate next year! (I'm sorry if that makes me evil, but I've been wanting to say that for quite some time).

Hey just trying to inform! Believe it or not this forum is not a propaganda tool of GW's! Its non-affiliated, so I'll say what I will.

The case has not been settled yet; thus, his side of the story is not (yet, anyway) a fact. Just because the newspapers already reported the case does not make his allegations true.

there were a few suicides /deaths/other strange events on campus back in 2003-2004. The university in turn expanded the counseling center services, helped the people who needed help, issued several medical withdrawals to those who requested them, and (in my opinion) rightfully cracked down on those with, uh, homicidal tendencies.

The safety of the students should always come first.

armcp: you have no life.

armcp, move on with your life...where does all the anger come from?

just more evidence that GW's a cold place. thanks for piling it on guys.
i'm not angry about anything Kimbee. I would like to know how you sense anger in my post, if you get that vibe you are most definitely inflecting it yourself. i have officially lost all of the respect i had for this school.

You're just antagonizing the people who do or are planning to go to GW.

Chill armcp. We're not sending bad vibes your way. You just have a tendency to pick fights on the GW board, and no one really wants to deal with that.

Go chat on the Tulane board.

Quit talking on Gw's board if you hate the school. Go to Tulane, where all the psychos run around freely on gently rolling hills of pristine grass. Have fun there, but stay away from our school!

Cold? Maybe, but that's life.

i don't hate the school! people's arguments only get personal like yours unless they have nothing to defend. i pointed out a flaw, objectively, about GW with evidence. just accept it. you guys are acting like i'm just rambling out bad stuff about GW without support. i have the support. this situation happened. DEAL WITH IT! all schools have skeletons in their closet, even GW- and if you can't admit that then you are most definitely illuminating something------LAST POST----please quit personally insulting me and my school now

I don't think you have what a reasonable person would call "evidence." Here's a more objective take on the situation from Slate on-line magazine: " ... don't be too quick to judge the schools. Potential suicides put them in a serious bind. On the one hand, it obviously constitutes discrimination to suspend every Zoloft-taker. On the other hand, keeping suicidal students on campus can compromise the well-being of other students and potentially open up schools to lawsuits from parents. Schools aren't necessarily wrong to take a tough stand. And in fact, some quasi-disciplinary measures may be in a suicidal student's best interests."

Wow! That poor kid. GW is a trip sometimes.

Although this thread contains no specific information, I will point out that psychological "illness" (I think of it more as being screwed up in the head, but let's just use the euphemism here, for argument's sake) takes many forms. Suicide is but one of those. And so, it is very much a rush to judgement to argue that he is a threat to himself or others, simply because he checked himself in. On top of that, the very fact that he DID take the initiative shows that he wasn't THAT severely screwed up - it is said that those truly crazy deny they have any issues. That does not seem to be the case here. And I would damn well be upset with GWU, after trying so hard to get in and working so hard to stay there, only to be kicked in the ass in an off-moment. What ever happened to medical records being sealed, anyway? His medical well-being is of no concern to the university, much less that information being made public. In a perfect world, none of this would have been released and we wouldn't be having this argument right now.
