The Chronicle: 3/14/2003: Legacy Admissions Are Defensible, Because the Process Can't Be 'Fair'

How much does being a legacy improve your chances of admission at Rice, based on this?

25 percent?

Does it only matter whether or not you're alegacy if you have a 2000+ sat, good sat 2s, and good grades?

Leave this board if you're only intent on trolling.

NOWHERE in that article says Rice gives a big edge to legacies. And even if Rice does give some sort of an edge, which the article justifies because of alumni donations et al, it's not the only university. Columbia and Penn are by far much more infamous for filling their freshman class almost 50% or more than that through the ED pool.

I was not a legacy, and I got into Rice.

I know some people who were legacies, and no, they did not get in. And I know some legacies who did get in.

Strange how out of the blue you pull up a 2003 article--what point are you trying to prove? And do you have evidence to back it up?

Admissions is much more than scores and GPA, that's all I'm going to say. There is NO GUARANTEED FORMULA to get into Rice.

The reason I did that is because I am a legacy who will apply regular decision and I want to know how much being a legacy will help me.
I have good stats, and I'm hoping that the legacy pregerence will tip the scales in my favor.
I'm nervous about whether or not I'll get in and I really want legacy preference to seal the deal for me. Thanks. It's not like I hate Rice for having legacy preference, I love Rice.

It won't hurt you, for sure, but unless your parents donated a building on campus or made some other significant contribution/donation, it won't really turn the tables that much in terms of admissions.

Obviously, the rest of your record needs to hold up.

yeah, but if I have a 2210 sat and good gpa and sat 2s, will it give me an extra edge to boost me into the admit pile?

that's what everyone, and a lot of boks like a is for admissions, say. jw

your stats are competitive enough to get in even without the extra edge of legacy.
just make sure you have good ECs, essays, ect.

too bad though that rice doesn't give the writing section equal weight as m and cr, i got an 800 in writing and 1410 in m + cr. hwever, the rice admission officer said that if you do really well on the writing section, it will help you, so it's not a complete waste thankfully.

a 1410 is obviously not enough to seal the deal, but hopefully legacy preference will take away my possibility of rejection, maybe? After this, I'll learn how much legacy preference really helps, because if If I get rejected, that means that legacy preference doesn't really mean much (my dad donates like only 150 a year).

Good for you. Stop fishing for compliments, and just apply.
