My S never really had a bike past elementary school. I pretty much insisted he try it for college mobility w/o car. Now he can’t see himself being on campus w/o it. But as @MTmom2017 said, there are plenty of generous theater kids with cars. There is also a shuttle bus system to the local shopping areas, etc.
@MTmom2017 - you bring up a good point. Unfortunately S is allergy boy! He will continue his allergy shots at WSU… His Allergy Dr.'s office says they will prepare he will carry his serum with him to OH. I saw there was a medical facility on campus that listed allergy shots as one of their services. What can you tell me about that facility if you know? He does carry an Epi-Pen or he is supposed to (!) and has an inhaler for infrequent asthma issues. I’m hoping the on campus medical services are sufficient?
@Dankadon - sent you a PM. Yes to campus medical services being sufficient, just sent more info.
An amazing 2016 WSU MT grad has been awarded the prestigious Roger Sturtevant Award for Musical Theatre from Actors’ Equity Association, the third Wright State University grad to receive this nationally competitive award. Named for a casting director who passed away in 2003, the award is given to EMCs who have demonstrated outstanding abilities in the field of musical theater. It’s presented to one male EMC and one female EMC based on a video audition and two written letters of recommendations submitted with resume, headshot and application.
Joe Deer, head of WSU MT department won an Ohio Governor’s Award for the Arts this spring. Here’s a video interview on a Dayton PBS show (first 7.5 minutes) in which he talks about the hows and whys of becoming an MT performer/educator, the Musical Theatre Initiative and the future of musical theatre. There are also a few clips of him teaching a class and They Both Reached for the Gun, from last fall’s main stage musical Chicago directed by Joe.

WSU 2016-17 audition dates are posted and the MT/Acting/dance application is ready to go.

If at all possible, shoot for attending a weekend with a masterclass on Friday, audition on Saturday. The November 13, 14 dates line up with the closing weekend of main stage musical No, No Nanette. See it if you can.
Oops! Totally mis-posted. Last year’s dates and application are still listed. I thought it was a bit early. WSU tends to post dates relatively late - August, or even beginning of September. Let’s hope it’s sooner this year.
Looks WSU is sticking with its traditional “Opening Day” for duck season - er, MT application season. Still no updates.
I just saw that audition dates for 2016-17 are posted! Like last year, they’re having an optional prescreen.
They must have just changed that. I checked a few days ago and the new dates hadn’t been posted yet. Unless I’m reading something wrong, there is a bit of confusion on the dates: The web page lists two masterclass dates - one on a Friday in November and one on Sunday in February. The application form only lists the November masterclass and the Sunday in February is listed as an audition day. Traditionally, there have been two Friday masterclasses (November & February), so if you’re applying this year, your might want to clarify that with Victoria Oleen.
Both the website and the application pdf have been corrected. The Friday masterclasses, November 4 and February 17, are now listed on both parts of the site. For those interested, the November audition date will overlap with the fall main stage musical, No, No, Nanette, and the February dates will coincide with the winter play, Children’s Hour. If you want to see NNN, Victoria Oleen usually has some tickets for auditionees and their families, but don’t wait too long. It will sell out.
Hi All - D is almost done with her application & wants to submit it. When she is on the “Select Major of Interest”, there are options for Acting, Dance, Theatre Studies, etc. but not for Musical Theatre. Can any CC’ers please advise at this hour
They’ve changed the whole website since my S applied. My guess is “Acting”. The MT degree is REALLY a “BFA in Acting with an Emphasis in MT”. There is a separate application on the Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures site which must be filled out and submitted to Victoria Oleen in the Theater Department. That application will get your D signed up for her audition and put her in consideration for talent scholarship.
We chose Acting when filling that part out I believe
Funny: When my D got her classes for freshman year, it said “Acting” for her major. I panicked - thought she’d been accepted as an acting major instead of MT (even though we had multiple emails/letters, etc saying MT). #:-S
D is all set for the November audition! Do any of y’all remember the format of the Friday dance call/Saturday audition? We have a 7 hour drive, and I am trying to figure out hotels. We are really hoping we can catch No, No, Nanette! while we’re there. She is SO excited-first audition.
Did she also sign up for the Friday masterclass? I believe that’s an all day thing - like a full school day. The audition starts early on Saturday and goes until at least late morning/early afternoon. Starts with dance call. Kids are taken for monologue/singing based on how far they have to travel/flight schedules afterwards. @MTmom2017’s D has volunteered for the auditions, so she would have a better idea. At least in the past, there was nothing formal planned for parents. They just hung out on Saturday in the student theater and there were current students to answer questions or they went off and did their own thing. Be sure to talk to Victoria Oleen about tickets for NNN, They usually have some reserved for auditioning students and family members. Don’t wait, though. They usually sell out
@mom4bwayboy thank you so much, that is exactly the info I needed. Yes, master class on Friday
I’m hearing great things about NNN). I hope you get to see it. (S is not in it, but will be in Heathers in the black box theater later in the month.)
I’ll ask my D if she’s working the audition - she usually does them because she really has fun doing it! Yes to what @mom4bwayboy said about the masterclass - for the kids & then on Saturday there will be a Q&A for parents. And D’s in NNN, but we won’t get to see it until the final weekend because we are not close. But we’ll see her this weekend - most of the Seniors are doing Drowsy Chaperone in WSU’s student run Directing Lab (more commonly called the D-Lab). It’s an amazing performance space for students.
