I was under the impression that one writes to request an appointment in the spring of one's junior year. However, a ROTC cadet I know said that I should get started ASAP and even send multiple letters. Is that right, and if so, what should I say?

You should visit the website for each of your members of congress. They will have a list of everything they want, when they want it, and how they want it.

and if it is not on the website, call them. Ask for the staffer who handles service academy nominations. He or she can explain what they want and how they want it.

O.K. thanks!

Would you recommend contacting them before your junior year to just get in touch and introduce yourself and your ambitions?

Absolutely! Our son contacted them during his sophomore year of H.S.

My son started attending our congressman's Academy nights in his freshman year. He went each year. He learned about all of the academies and about ROTC scholarships. Our congressman got voted out and we ended up with a newbie when it came time for seeking a nomination, but it was still valuable information.
