I am a junior, and I plan on applying to the Naval Academy. I already signed up for the Summer Seminar, and got in. At this time, what else should I be doing to prepare my application. When should I start applying for my nominations?

Congratulations on your Summer Seminar acceptance! You should stay the course academically, sports-wise and medically. Think of a tough schedule when you fill out next year's school classes. Our daughter took 5 AP classes, including 2 Math AP. Now, I don't think everyone USNA takes has to do this, but it probably helped in her early acceptance, along with everything else. Study, study, study for good SAT scores.

As far as the nomination process...I called our Congressman's offices directly, and attended the orientation meetings in San Diego County for all interested in the service academies. You should check with your school counselor to see if something like that happens in your area...and it's a good way to have everyone in one place, including your Congressman's representative. I asked our Congressman's office when the deadline was for nomination apps, and was told Oct. 31st..I was asking in March ...I asked if getting an application in early has any advantage and was told in there case, no - that whatever comes is put in a file until Oct. 31st. The only advantage of a little bit of an earlier app filing, was that they review the paperwork and if you didn't complete something correctly, they tell you to allow you time to fix the problem before the deadline. So I would encourage you to contact the people directly yourself.

There are tons of pages on info on this forum to help answer your questions. Scroll through alot of the threads from last summer to now, enjoy...and ask away!

God Bless your desires to serve our country! This mom, for one is greatful.

Thank you so much. I have a pretty tough schedule planned for next year, with 4 AP classes. I also took one this year, and the rest of my classes have been all honors. I have already heard about a meeting in our area for candidates interested in attending any of the service academies, and I plan to attend that this month. As far as athletics, I will have 12 varsity letters in indoor and spring track and cross country and I will be captain for atleast two of them next year. The only thing that isn't so good is my SAT score. I have a 670 M, a 540 V and a 620 W. I am taking them again in June. How much will SAT scores affect my application?

let's just say it in 2 words, 1milew....

A LOT

Hey, way to go lmilew. You have good start on a wild ride. Did you receive a candidate number yet? If so, get your teacher recs. done NOW, before school gets out. Just start filling out the simple portions of the app., like your activity records and stuff. A lot can be said for an early app. Careful not ot rush important stuff like the personal statement. I guess that's all for now. This all depends if you have a candidate number. Congratulations.

Sigh...... To be 16 again. :(

Too soon old, too late smart.

You have no idea how lucky you are, dude. Take advantage of the opportunities and GO FOR IT!

i am in very much the same situation as 1milew - i am a junior and planning to attend the Summer Seminar (no letter yet). i have seven letters, and am currently on the "recruitment" list for wrestling (it definitely helps to live five minutes outside of annapolis!) i am planning on taking 4 ap classes next year, including calculus. my sat's are as following: 750 v, 560 m, 690 w. one problem: the naval academy recommends sat II tests, but there is only one test date left this year, at least until october. should i take the sat II's, or attempt to bring up my math score on the sat I?

Negatory on the SAT II"s. Unless their system has changed drastically from last year, you absolutley do not need SAT II's. Advise me where they recommedn them, in case I missed something. Also, I took SAT I's until Nov. and turned them in and they were accepted. October is not too late.

how do you get a candidate number

It comes in the mail. I guess I was lucky because my NASS acceptance was dated March 23, and the letter with my candidate number came in a letter dated May 12. I was lucky because I got it before school got out. Like I said, I recommend you immediatley get to work on your app. as soon as your number comes.

i know approximately how many girls are accepted, but how many would you say apply?

Class of 2009:
2,250 of 11,259 total apps were female.
304 of 1,503 total offers of appointment were to females.

1milew...USNA says once you have exchanged '5 pieces' of mail with them, you get into their DoDMERB cycle and by then you have a candidate number. Our kiddo got hers in late May last year. I also have a theory about these numbers, and I don't know if anyone who knows can confirm. The first 2 numbers are your region... We are region 4, hence the candidate number begins: "04" The next 4 numbers are the sequencing from USNA's perspective of the order they submit you into their admissions pool. 04----.....you have 4 digits to work with from your region. Our kiddo's number was really low, but she applied on day one of NASS, Feb. 1st '05....

Anyway, that's just my thoughts on numbers.

Im really interested too, I havent heard back from NASS yet, but am still optimistic

Skunk where in MD do u live? Im in Pasadena right now

Beware: Living that close the Academy is a blessing and a curse. You are conveniently close, but it is a highly competitive area.

heh, thanks for telling me that (i already knew, lol)

do you have to have a candidate number when applying for nominations?

no- candidate # is for usna only. when applying for nominations it is separate from the academy, you apply to your MOC's office. you only need it if you apply for a pres. nom. because you apply to the academy for the presidential nom.

During a visit with the admissions counselor at USNA, we were told that only candidates that met minimum criteria were given candidate numbers.

He humerously said something like "score 1100 on the SAT and we will give you an application, score 1200 and we will let you mail it back, and score 1300 and we will look at it." That was in the era when only Math and Verbal tests were given.

We were told the minimum scores of 600 verbal, and 600 math, with a minimum composite for the best administrations of 1300 were necessary for consideration. I do not know if this is still true, but assume so, when looking at the profile for the class of '09.

There are appointees with lower scores, but many of them come from NAPS, Foundation, or the fleet. We were told that the stated minimums were for students applying directly from HS.
