I'm thinking about writing my supplement essay on my first time at a high school dance. I went with the girl I liked, but found the dancing disgusting (it was grinding almost all the time).

We ended up playing hide and seek, and we slow danced at the end. I think writing about the experience would show my rebellious, non-conformist side well.

I'm worried that I'll come off as an antisocial loser though, which I'm really not. I just don't approve of grinding.

Any opinions?

Chances are the person reading the essay will sympathize with your view of contemporary dance trends, since they will undoubtedly be older.

Since it’s a short answer, I doubt you’ll have enough space to explain your thoughts and actions. It may come off that you are antisocial.

The person reading your essay is probably in their mid to late 20s [the admissions commissioners are usually in grad school, the dean of admissions are the old ones], so he/she might have grinded and still is.

And I’m not sure if just saying no to grinding comes off as rebellious and non-conformist.

Ultimately, it depends on how you write your essay. If you do come off as rebellious and non-conformist, great.

Actually after hearing that summary, I’m kind of curious as to all the details haha.

Anyway yeah, I think it’s risky, but you know that already. I’d say if you end up going for it, just try to make it more of an “I-don’t-let-others-influence-me” kind of thing as opposed to an “I’m-so-antisocial-and-close-minded” one. Good luck!!

I don’t think this makes you rebellious…

^Yeah, after thinking about it, probably not. Thanks for the responses. I’ve decided to write about something else.
