So I was wondering if it is advisable for me to write about the problem of mental health in our society if I include a personal experience of interning at a psychology clinic and am planning to major in psychology. Is it too much of a controversial topic if I base the essay around school shootings relating to mental health?
“Controversy” of the topic is not the issue. The most important part of that prompt is the last sentence; the least important part is the first sentence.
If your internship in some way linked to school shootings (also, do you mean school shootings and the mental health of the shooter or the students?) and you took something more substantive than ‘I got interested in this topic’ from it - go for it. Just keep in mind that the job of the essay is to sell you as an applicant, not to educate the AO’s.
Have you signed a privacy thing for the clinic you are interning at? You are a minor child in a clinical setting?
