would demonstrating a party affiliation harm me? my essay obviously wouldn't be intensely opinionated, but i'm wondering if adcoms read into this kind of stuff, for better or for worse. i don't want for any negative stigmas to interfere with my aspects of character also demonstrated in the essay.

I would think writing about that particular subject would be quite risky. If you can write about it in a way that really has nothing to do with politics and you can make it more of a jumping off point about something else, I think you’d be in the clear.

Go for it. I don’t believe that it will hurt you, but if it does, why would you want to go to a school that discriminates on the basis of your political beliefs anyway?

It’s definitely something fresh to write about. So go for it. But make sure that your essay focuses more on your experiences & thoughts during the volunteering and less on your political preferences

thanks, guys. i’d definitely steer the emphasis away from my own opinions

Why would you ever steer an essay away from your own opinions? The college is trying to see who you are from these essays. If you are a an adamant supporter of the Republicans then say so. If you take who you are out of your essay then it will just look like some cliched watered-down “I did community service” essay. I would actually recommend you do the opposite of what everybody else is suggesting: emphasize what your opinions are, how they have been shaped and essentially what has happened in your life that makes you a die-hard Republican. Some interesting things must have happened if you are involved enough to volunteer for the party.

Like everyone else said it’s good to take an intelligent stand and express who you are. HOWEVER, I’d be careful with the context of how you write it. Don’t ‘look down upon’ or criticize democrats, because if you offend the adcom reading it…

In general politics your supposed to take a stand and support what you believe. But the easiest way to gain enemies is to completely trash the opposing party. Understand their views and where their coming from, don’t necessarily agree with it but respect it. Everyones entitled to their own opinion.
