I want to be part of something that involves writing fairly frequently. It doesn't have to be a newspaper (and no one say an English Lit class :P)

I'm interested mainly in opinion pieces and creative writing.

i haven't heard updates about applying to daily bruin for fall quarter. has anybody? i tried emailing the contact a week ago but she hasn't gotten back to me yet.

last year, news had a 40% acceptance rate and Arts and entertainment had 30%. the applicant pool is generally strong, so i;'dd say its moderately competitive but not terribly. rates for other sections are far higher. if you get rejected, you can try again in winter.

Don't forget about the literary magazines! Alev (I think thats how you spell it?) for social sciences and also Westwind, for more English/poetry types. As far as I know they don't get huge readership, but it sounds like thats the type of writing you're more interested in. You can also get Honors credit for those, unlike the Daily Bruin.

I've been involved at the DB for two years, so I kind of know the ropes. Every section of the DB recruits 2 quarters to year, Fall and one other quarter (usually Winter for most sections, but I think A&E does Spring). Fall is always tougher to get accepted to, mostly because a ton of freshmen who did newspaper in high school apply. If you're really serious about getting involved in the Bruin, it's not that tough to get accepted though. The open house is on Wednesday the first or second week (you should be getting an e-mail soon). Also, Viewpoint, which usually accepts 3-10 applicants for quarter, is the toughest to get accepted.

how does DB know my email? i haven't submitted anything to them yet. also would u elaborate on the honors credit for westwind?

i'm a creative writer too-i like to write mainly creative non-fiction. in fact, i'm working on a memoir novel...where can i seek help when i'm done w/ draft 1? ucla extension?

If you sent them an e-mail expressing interest, they added you to a mailing list that will let you know when the open house is. They get tons of e-mails like that and can't respond to them all individually. Probably during the first week you'll get info.

could those credits count towards the english minor? looks like a fun class! has anybody taken it? it seems like lotsa work's done in class but not as much outside of it. is that true?

it all depends on the section, how fast you write, and how much you wanna commit! (as a general rule, writing sections expect a contribution at LEAST every 2 weeks, much more often if you want to get some salt) but without a doubt DB is a large commitment.
