Writing an Appeal Letter

Please heeeeelp!

A lot has happened financially since last fall. My mom lost her job in a merger and my dad's salary has been cut (like by a LOT).

How do I write an "appeal" letter to a financial aid office? Is it the FA office I need to communicate with OR admissions?

Making an appointment and going in person is not an option b/c of travel distance.

I really don't have all the details-- should I write from my "heart" and what knowledge I have AND have my mom write as well, with more of the specifics?

You want to talk to the FA office, say that you would like a reevaluation/review (not an appeal or negotiation) of your FA package since there have been substantial changes in income since you filed. If the FA office wants you to send them some information, you can FAX it to them immediately.

Maybe others will disagree, but I think you’re best to stick with the facts rather than be too emotional. How about having one of your parents call as they understand your family’s financial situation better than you.

Best of luck.

Most schools have a form for change of circumstances. You will need to get in touch with the FA office and fill out this form. BUT be advised that for many schools there is a waiting period. In other words, you will out the form xxx number of months after the layoff or change has occurred. Additionally your FAFSA for 09/10 is calculated on your 2008 income tax forms so changes in circumstances aren’t necessarily considered in FA for 09/10 until the year after the reduction in income has occurred.
