Writing Seminars Major

D loves Creative Writing but stuggles with the anaytical essays and research papers that are so often the core of typical English department courses and majors. Can anyone speak to the Writing Seminars Major or Minor at Hopkins? Is it a place for a kid who loves to write short stories and poems but hates to analyze Shakespeare and Chaucer?

Son just graduated as a writing sems major. You don’t actually need to take any standard English courses. However many of the courses have extensive reading assignments often in modern fiction. Thus for one course he read Philip K Dick’s work (ie Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) and had to write papers on the reading. She will have to analyze poems and fiction but she can pick and choose among the many courses and select courses with writings that interest her. Feel free to PM me.

I think it’s a good home for students who are one the more creative side as opposed to being more of a traditionalist when it comes to interpretations and classical literature. The major itself I feel is more of a composition and discussion style major with smaller classes which are prone to contemporary writings.
