I started a business and I was wondering if I should put CEO and Founder or just Founder. My Dad said that it's laughable and would ruin my chances at being admitted if I put CEO. What should I do?

Founder is good enough. Everyone gets it.

I don’t think it would hurt you at all to put CEO. Even a one person company has a president or CEO in their corporate papers, I am the president of mine…

While “laughable” is kinda harsh, I see where your dad is coming from. A CEO implies the Chief Executive Officer of a company or organization – an understanding that this company is either incorporated or otherwise organized in some formal manner.

Would you smirk if a 12 year old kid, towing along his lawnmower, rings your front door bell andsays: “My name is Jimmy, the CEO of Jimmy’s Lawn Care. I can cut your front lawn for $30. Do you need my services?”

He meets the criteria of “CEO” doesn’t he? Would you introduce yourself confidently as the CEO to everyone with whom you’d discuss your business? If not, then don’t do it on your app.

Hmm everyone has some differing opinions. I mean I would introduce myself as CEO, I’m just not sure how much an admissions officer would take me seriously.

CiaoRagazzi

Just put Founder, easy to understand and looks very nice :)

Another vote against “CEO”. It sounds terribly pretentious. And unless there are other “executive officers” in the business, the title doesn’t even make sense.

Okay thanks. what about profits…are you guys putting how much money you made?

OP, is your business formally incorporated? My advice assumed it is… and if so, you would want to point out to admissions that you are the CEO of an S-corp you founded called “x” that does “x”. If it isn’t, then I would skip the title reference.

were incorporated as an LLC in Nevada, so I mean I guess I could take your advice, but I think it might be more modest to just put founder

I’m the President, CEO (technically), and co-Founder of my non-profit organization. I agree that putting CEO is kind of ridiculous (maybe less so for a non-profit, where we actually are “legally required” to have a CEO." I’m just going to put co-Founder and President on my college app.

Ok cool. I ended up changing it to just Founder.

I think you made the right choice Good luck :)

thanks 10char
