ok, so I have heard all these horror stories about WTE, and was wondering what was so bad about it. How heavy is the workload? Any teachers you recommend for this subject? I will be a freshman in Stern next year, btw. As for ConWest, only a handful of them interested me, one being the "You and I" one, although i dont think thats the actual title. Can anyone attest to how hard this class is [I read the description and it sounded crazy]? Lastly, for World Cultures, I was thinking about taking the one on Russia. Can anyone give me the pros and cons?

for conwest, are you talking about the course poetic and ethical I? if so, i just took that one this semester. in terms of workload, it was certainly a lot lighter than most other conwest courses (I had a weekly response to write for recitation and three essays which only the highest two were counted). However, the course content was very dense and maybe more so than other conwest courses. it was very frustrating at first but recitation does help a lot and make sure to ask questions with the things you are confused about. it is very easy to fall asleep in class (as with all conwest classes) but make sure to take thorough notes and stay on top of the readings.

also, if you're a stern student, you may by pass WTE if you have a 720 or above in SAT writing. If you have a 720+ you get to take Commerce and Culture (which i took last semester, a mild workload compared to WTE). If you have a 750+ you get exempt from all first-semester writing courses.

writing the essay is a good course, don't believe any horror stories. it should probably be only one semester, but its still okay.

yea, I'm going to be in stern. How about the Russian Culture class?

Oh btw, it was the Poetic and Ethical I. That was helpful, I guess I'll go through with it. Ah I got a 690 on writing =[ How was commerce and culture?

^ is being exempt from WTE because of the sat writing specific to stern?

Stephennn - yes, i am pretty sure.

anorexic_abe - commerce and culture i feel is probably more worthwhile for stern students. it's a pilot course this year so that means there is a possibility that if it gets good reviews from students then they might have all Sternies take that instead of WTE in the near future.

I heard a rumor that they might be getting rid of the stern exempt from wte thing cause others are complaining that it only applies to the 40 people who met the criteria out of a freshman class of 5000. I hope they don't, but just be weary.

^ But then again Stern kids only account for about less then 600 of those incoming 5000.

dang, that sucks. I would much rather take C&C. How about that russian class...

Take WTE with McClelland if you can! He really made the class an interesting experience.

i freaking HATED writing the essay. as a junior taking it, it was so stupid.

you learn a style of writing that you will NEVER EVER USE DURING COLLEGE. you learn an insipid writing style and way of thinking that does nothing to enhance your writing.

i managed to get to junior year of college without WTE (as a transfer) and i couldn't get out of it. i hated my professor and every single second of it. i didn't learn a thing. it was just frustrating. even english majors hate it.

it's only one semester.

^ i guess you really liked the class.
