Writing & Zoology/Vet Colleges

I'm a junior in high school and have begun to look at colleges. What I ideally want is one with:

A strong Zoology program. I am really passionate about animals, and definitely want to pursue a career in studying them. I'm interested mainly in research and conservation in the field - so for example I would like to jet off to Africa to help programs conserving elephants. Would Zoology even be the right path to take for that kind of work?

I also love to write (specifically screenwriting and creative) and would really like to study it as well in college. Is this possible with a Zoology major (especially while possibly trying to complete the vet school prerequisites)? Are there any colleges with strong programs in both these areas?

Good study abroad opportunities. It's really important to me that the school has this.

I don't know if that all makes sense or if its too specific but I thought it was worth a try.

Although there are certainly others to consider, such as Ohio State (EEOB), Wisconsin & UCD in the west coast. Overall, MSU is EXACTLY what you are looking for as many if not most of its life sciences classes (College of Natural Science) center around Zoology, and its Creative Writing Center Program is superb. Last but not least, ranked #1 Study Aboard Program in the country every year for the last decade. Go State!! :)

Rhodes might be a good choice for you. As a liberal arts college you’d have no trouble pursuing writing and a biology major. Writing intensive courses are part of the core curriculum, there’s a writing center on campus, there’s a literary publication, and there’s a writing concentration in the English major.

Rhodes seems to have a reputation for its sciences and pre-health advising, which includes advising for vet school. Zoology is a part of the biology curriculum. There’s a ton of opportunities for research with professors, but more than that the Memphis Zoo is one of the country’s best and it is literally across the street from campus. We have students doing research over there every semester.

The study abroad program is also really strong. About 60% of students go abroad.

Another thing worth thinking about is a Watson fellowship after college, and that’s something we have good luck with. It’s a fellowship that allows you to spend a year traveling the globe getting involved with something you’re passionate about, like conserving elephants in Africa. We’ve got a former Watson fellow on staff and have a dedicated post-baccalaureate advisor who works with fellowship candidates.

And based on your username, I’m guessing you might like the architecture of the place!

Good luck!

Ohio Wesleyan, Miami (OH), Ohio State and Wisconsin. Also, possibly Colorado State, Oregon State and SUNY Oswego. Best of luck!

Thank you! That helped so much, some of those colleges look amazing. Thanks again for your time!
