I’m not sure if anyone can help, but just in case, I’ll ask. I know that this situation would vary across schools, but does anyone know what I can further do if a teacher gave me a wrong grade, other than talk to/email the teacher himself? Here’s my situation:
2 week’s ago, I turned in an assignment that was part of a bigger group project, a bit late. Another group member had did it wrong, so I redid it, which is why it was late. I kept asking him to update the grade because he didn’t, and he said to “stop bothering him”, and he’d do it eventually. I know teachers are busy, so I waited it out, thinking I would have an A in the class after he updated it. I have a super borderline B (an 89.2%), and that’s only because he put a 0 for that assignment, which brought my grade down from a 92% to an 89.2%, (89.5 or above is an A in our school) which means it should be an A if he fixed that one grade. But it’s now summer, and yesterday was the last day of school, so he told me to come at lunch to tell him what I needed to talk about (my grade) but he wasn’t there. I can’t directly contact him anymore, so I sent an email, but I’m afraid he won’t read it, since I only know his school email, and teachers usually only glance at those.
I have tried to tell him this before, so it’s not like I waited until the last minute. And furthermore, the rest of my group has the grade for the assignment, so I’m really confused why I don’t.
So what I wondering was, would it be OK to contact someone else (counselor, etc…), so that they can help? Or would they think that I’m being irritating or making a if deal out of nothing?
If your group turned their part of the project in on the due date, it makes sense that they’d receive a grade. If you didn’t turn in anything on the due date, why wouldn’t you get a 0? Did you have permission to take extra time to complete the assignment?
Who, in all likelihood, will do nothing without consulting the teacher.
Define “a little late” and what is the policy on late assignments/extensions? There should be no expectation of full/partial credit if guidelines were not followed.
Well, we’re only hearing one side of the story.
I’m not sure why you need this. You’re finishing 9th grade, so if your grade warrants a change, it really does not matter if it is changed now or later.
Did the rest of your group turn something in on time, or was the entire group submitted late?
Yes, I would contact the department chair and your guidance counselor. Even if the grade will stand as entered because of the late submission, they need to know that the teacher blew you off, and did not provide such an explanation. You should have done this before school ended, but you can still do so now, if those people are available. Certainly make the attempt, and document the attempt. The grade change might have to wait until school starts again, but unless you need your transcripts now, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
The whole group turned it in late, and we all split up the work (we didn’t have to, but we thought it would be easier if we all had separate parts). We gave it later since one of my teammates was sick on the due date and the day after, and she had part of the project. My teacher was OK with it being late by 1 day. The part that I got a 0 for was supposed to be another group member’s responsibility, but she didn’t know how to do it, so I re-did it, and she did something else, which is why it was late.
I need it graded quickly because the gradebook closes soon, and it’s a hassle for the teacher and me to change the grade after that. I contacted my principle, and she said that she’d ask the teacher, and they’d look into it.
I’m definitely not saying it’s my teacher’s fault, by the way! I know he’s probably super busy. I’m really sorry if my wording came across as rude! I didn’t mean it sound like that. I was just a little sad that it’s been a couple weeks that I’ve been asking him, and he said he’ll fix it, but it hasn’t been fixed for me yet, and this effects my semester grade. Btw, the late policy is to subtract 10% from the grade, if it’s been submitted my the latest deadline (which was 3 days after the due date, and we had turned it in by then).
I’m kinda new on CC, so I’m still getting the hang of how to phrase my questions. Thanks for all the advice! I really appreciate it, and thanks for giving me another perspective on the matter.
Oh update (kinda?): I found out some other people have the same problem, even if they turned theirs in on time. So maybe it’s just a technical issue, but either way, I’ve sent emails and photo evidence I turned it in (He’s known for losing student’s papers, so my classmates and I have started taking pictures of important assignments haha
I say keep pressing to get the grade corrected. When my son was in 10th grade, last day of school he did the final exam and he knew he did great. Next day online he sees a C for that test instead of an A. Fortunately next few days were make up exams so teachers were still in school. I drove him all the way to school so he could find that teacher. I waited in the car. Turns out the teacher put another kids grade in his spot. He fixed it immediately. Good luck!!
If anyone cares, here’s an update:
My grade got fixed! Turns out it was just a switch up of grades haha. So like Nurse001 advised, if you’re in the same situation, ask for the teacher to double check the grade, and keep persisting. Most teachers will eventually fix the grade. Thanks for the advice everyone
