Hey! I’m a current freshmen in my first undergrad semester at college.
Ok, I know this sounds weird, but please bear with me - Before starting college, I was sure that I was pre-med. It was what I loved and enjoyed. I made a back-up plan if pre-med didn’t work out, because for many people it doesn’t.
Fast forward to the summer before college, I was getting more and more sure that pre-med just wasn’t for me (esp. since I had just started volunteering at the local hospital - couldn’t do it before because i wasn’t old enough).
(I was also quite interested in finance and perhaps pursuing a B.S. in finance and then getting my masters.) It’s now about 2 months into freshmen year, and I am struggling A LOT with general chemistry I (basic pre-med course). I’ve tried office hours, YT videos, tutoring, group study sessions, but it’s just not something that I enjoy or understand. Plus, add on health related issues, this class is hell for me. So i’ve decided to drop this class, but dropping at this point would give me a W on my transcript. I don’t mind the W because if i do pursue a finance degree/masters/MBA, chemistry is not related closely to finance lol. However, this is where the problem comes in - I had also signed up for a 1-credit CPR/First Aid course that the school offers because I wanted to be certified (which is really nice so I don’t have to pay for certification from an outside source). This class literally only meets for two Saturdays this semester, and we get our CPR/First Aid certification. However, due to a family member being sick, I have to be out of the country during the FIRST DAY OF THE CLASS UGH. Obviously attendance is mandatory for both sessions, but I can’t make it to the first one, so I’ll have to drop this as well. I’ve emailed the professor to see if I can be removed from the roster without penalty since the class hasn’t even started yet, but I haven’t heard back.
So, my question is this - If I apply to an MBA program, how much will 2 (potential, 1 for sure) W’s in my very first semester affect my chances? (I definitely plan on taking the CPR/First Aid course when it’s offered next semester). Are they going to view my application negatively and do you think I’ll have the chance to explain to them why I dropped the classes (health, family emergency, not interested in course material)?
If you’ve made it this far, thanks- any advice is appreciated because I’m getting so anxious about this.
ps- dropping both courses does not incur any kind of financial or academic penalty on me, just the W’s on the transcript
