ASU participates in the Western Undergrad Exchange (WUE) program where people from western states get to enroll for 150% of in-state tuition, which is nice. But on ASU’s website, it says that people paying that tuition aren’t eligible for regular resident or even non-resident scholarships (although they can get a special WUE scholarship of a couple thousand).

I’m interested in the National Merit scholarship, which I’ve heard covers full OOS tuition. Does anyone know if I’d still be eligible for that scholarship if I did the WUE thing? Would I just get a smaller scholarship that would cover my full WUE tuition?

Definitely go with the Nat. Merit if you get it, I heard that ASU doesn’t stack scholarships which is messed up so you’d probably only get the WUE one plus any grants and then loans. Also with the WUE thing, check to make sure you’re eligible with your major for that. I remember looking at some schools that were a part of WUE and some never gave reduced tuition for business majors.

OK, thanks Merlana. I checked the Honors college website again and it does not list any dollar amount for their NMF scholarships. I’ll give them a call.

yeah, it was the same way last year which I found really annoying, but I believe if you call admissions there’s actually a “Press # for Scholars” thing which is what I did. You just have to say, I’m a national merit finalist/semifinalist I was wondering how much the instate/OOS scholarship is for this year.

Actually, yes I did. I’m in my first year the the Barrettt honors college now and love it. I got into some more highly ranked schools, but toured and fell in love with the place. I highly reccomend touring barrett and ASU if you’re thinking about coming here. There is so much oppertunity at this school if you take the time to find it. :)

Merlana, thanks for the info. My daughter is interested in Archaeology and it sounds as though ASU has a good program. She’s also applying to some higher ranked schools but Barretts looks pretty impressive and the price is certainly good. We’ll plan a visit at some point before decisions need to be made.

^ The physical anthropology program here is top notch (including archaeology, bioarch, etc.). I’m an anthro minor, and they have tons of opportunities for those interested in the subject.

Midwestpop - Dr. Nelson, the Vice Dean of Barrett is a professor in the anthropology department. My son is currently taking a class with her, Community of Undergraduate Research, and speaks pretty highly of her. The COURs class is for Barrett students doing research in any field (he is in engineering) and he seems to like it a lot. The reason I bring this up is that if you end up doing a campus visit, you may want to specifically request a meeting with Dr. Nelson if you visit Barrett. And I highly recommend the campus visit, you will be wow-ed by the Honors College campus. I think that when we did the campus visit, they quoted a statistic that something like 90% of the NMF who do a campus visit of Barrett end up enrolling. And that was before the new Barrett complex opened! I think the NMF scholarships are less now than they used to be, unfortunately, but it is still a pretty sweet deal. We are also from the Midwest and did the campus visit in January. We left home at -12 degrees and it was min the mid-70s at ASU. Yet another selling point!

C3Baker, thanks for the info. It was very helpful. My daughter is planning to finish up the Barrett application tomorrow. We hope to schedule a visit before the end of the year and tour both ASU and U of Arizona. We’ll definitely need to try and connect with Dr. Nelson. And yes (!) the Arizona weather in the winter would be very nice! Did your son consider any other schools that offer the big NMF scholarships? Alabama? Arizona? Baylor?

In case anyone else was wondering, a letter that my DD received from Barrett’s this week stated “A Nonresident (NMF) will be awarded the amount of nonresident tuition for the 2011-2012 year and will remain at the same amount for eight semesters. For example, this year’s OOS tuition is $20,257, however we anticipate that the amount will increase for the upcoming year”.

So it looks as though ASU is continuing the full tuition scholarship program for the 2011-2012 school year. That sure keeps ASU on DD’s short list!
