I just got in 5 colleges...
I want to major in Bio or Business....
i don't really know which univ i should choose...
Grinnell and Maca gave me 20000 each year so my FC will be around 15000 to 20000
WUSTL NYU Umichgan no financial aid at all...
All CAS..major: Undecided...
pls give me some suggestions...
Thx

Holy apples & oranges school selection there, Batman. Hard to help you w/o more... what the heck are you looking for in a school - big, small, urban, rural?

well...
they are all ok for me...
Big, small.urban ,rural..
I heard that WUSTL is overrated..
and Michgan is a public school
NYU's bio is bad
Grinnell Maca are in the midd of corn field and will be hard to find a job after grad.
its really a hard choice..

Have you visited any of these schools? I getting the sense that you may be an int'l student from the timing of your posts (suffering from severe insomnia myself!), the broad generalizations made about the schools, and your school selection, which are typically int'l-friendly. If so, can you make a trip prior to your decision, to visit at least some of the campuses? I would really urge it, if feasible.

For the record, Macalester is most definitely NOT in a cornfield, but rather an urban school in the heart of Minneapolis-St. Paul, a metro area of over 3 million. Grinnell is a different story, however. Neither of these LACs would offer a business program, but I don't think your career options are limited by any means, particularly if you plan on graduate or professional school afterward.

George, so what if Michigan is public?

yeah i am an intel...
maybe i may not have time to go to US since i must make the decision before may 1st...
thx for your advise...i am going crazy right now since it's really a hard choice...

Alexandre
a public school is too big for me...too many people..
like staying in my own country///

George, Michigan is smaller than NYU and NYU is private. USC and BU are almost as large as Michigan and they are private. Not all private schools are small and not all public schools are huge.

Anyway, if you don't want a large school and wish to major in Business, the only school in your list that makes sense is WUSTL. Grinnell and Macalester do not have Business pograms and NYU is larger than Michigan.

yeah i know..just a friend in umichgan told me she doen;t like it b/c its too big there...
thx anyway..
what do you think about the economy program in Grinnell and Macalaster?

Be careful not to base your decision on your friend's opinion. Yes, Michigan is huge, but it is made up of several small communities. For example, the Business program has 1,000 students (350 per graduating class). The college of Engineering has its own campus with 7,500 undergraduare and graduate students. The colleges of Music and Art/Architecture also have their own separate campuses with 2,000 or so students. The residential college is a small LACish program within the university for those interested in Languages and the Humanities. A university like Michigan is so wealthy and well designed that you will only feel the size when dealing with the administration, corssing the main campus or at a football game. Otherwise, you really won't feel the size.

At any rate, both Grinnell and Macalester have good Econ programs.

george89 - It comes down to money. If that is not a problem, then WUSTL is the perfect choice. It has a great bio program and also encourages students to take courses in different disciplines. Ideal size (6,000 undergrad) - large enough to feel like a research university with a LAC feel. Located in the suburbs of a metropolitan area without a big city feel. But then again it will cost you quite a bit more than the schools that offered you funding. Unfortunate that you can not visit, since the schools all have different personalities.

alexandre:
thank you so much...
and what do you know about the bio dept. in Grinnell and Macalaster?I heard that the bio dept. in Grinnell is awesome..What about Macalaster?Which dept. does it famous for?

ST2
yeah.. thx.. these schools all are different...so its really a hard choice...
anyway..maybe the competition will between WUSTL,Grinnell,Umich,Macalaster only since i heard that NYU will cost me about 60000 bucks a year...too expensive to me...

SUBJECTIVE DATA

Peer Assessment:
Wash U: 4.1 U Michigan: 4.5 NYU: 3.8
Macalester: 4.0 Grinnell: 4.2

For the schools classified as national universities, you have two larger universities and one mid-sized university. NYU and U Michigan are quantitatively very similar with NYU having advantages in class sizes and faculty resources while U Michigan has slightly greater selectivity and financial resources. Student body quality between NYU and U Michigan is very, very close as measured by SAT scores and # of 1500 scorers (both tiny advantage to NYU), although U Michigan has meaningfully more top 10% students. Among academics, U Michigan is the most highly regarded of the three according to the Peer Assessment score. Wash U is the school that many on CC love to bash. But based on the objective data above, it is a clear winner in every objective category.

For the schools classified as LACs, these schools look statistically very close. Grinnell holds very slim advantages in most of the categories, but I think most observers would not conclude too much from these minor differences.

While Wash U and Grinnell would appear to be the strongest schools, fit supersedes all of this and the other schools all have a lot to offer and may be a better choice for you. I hope you get the chance to visit at least some of these because they are more than apples and oranges-they are a whole fruit basket.

Thx a billion!!!!!!!
Thats really really helpful to me!!!!!

anyone can tell me how's the bio dept. in these colleges?

I just posted some tools and tips about sorting out the options that may be helpful to you: http://collegehunt.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-to-make-final-college-choice.html

In particular, the paired comparison tool I mentioned is very useful when you're comparing very different options.

Good luck.
