Yale 2024 Applicants Discussion

^^ From Yale’s Admission website:

"Supplementary Materials
Supplementary materials can provide broader context to some parts of your application, but they can just as often be superfluous and distracting. For example, a letter from someone who supervised your extracurricular research project may answer important questions about the work you’ve done. But a third recommendation that raves about you, just as your other letters do, will not necessarily enhance your application. In fact, it may dilute the effect of the two required recommendations. For more information visit our page on supplementary materials…

Supplementary materials - academic work
If you have been engaged in advanced science or engineering research, you may consider submitting the STEM Research Supplement Form, available via the Yale Admissions Status Portal after you submit your application. The optional form will allow you to attach a research paper or abstract for review. It also includes the option to invite a research mentor to submit a letter of recommendation electronically or via mail or fax to the admissions office. Full research papers are generally more helpful than abstracts. If your research incorporated work from many individuals or was part of a larger project, please indicate your specific contributions when completing the form. The deadline to submit a STEM Research Supplement Form is November 6 for Single-Choice Early Action applicants and January 8 for Regular Decision applicants…

If you have been engaged in advanced scientific research, you should consider requesting a letter of recommendation from a research mentor who has been involved personally with your scientific work. Follow the instructions in the Academic Work section above to submit your research via the Status Portal and request a recommendation letter from your mentor."

Does the work your son did to win the state award fit into this category, advanced science or engineering research?

I’m a RD applicant but I DID NOT get an interview ???

@BAMMBI My D also has not been contacted for an interview yet, I think there is still time in February.

Yes, still time. From Yale website:

hi everyone! just wanted to inform you guys that likely letters are out and they go to everybody, not just athletes and STEM majors! I just received mine tonight as a planned global affairs major. I never thought I would get in so this is such a happy surprise!

@MaloMoriQuamFoedari Congrats! Did it come via snail mail, portal update, email? Also, had you done an alum interview prior?

Thank you! I got an email this morning from my admissions officer in my region and we set up a time for a phone call. I got the call a couple of hours later and was told i got in. I believe all likely letters are done through a phone call. Also I didn’t have my alum interview yet (its this saturday) so i think thats quite reflective of the weight interviews have lol.

That’s a nice way to do it! So happy for you! Yes, ironic about the interview timing! Well I bet this is a relief and a joy!

I’m a STEM major and I also got an email from the AO for my region yesterday and then we spoke on the phone and he told me I got in! I’m still waiting to hear from my first choice so I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but I feel a huge relief and excitement to have heard from Yale! Best of luck to everyone else waiting!

@Pepperoncini18

Congratulations! Did you get an invitation to YES-W as well?

it seems like every stem major applicant is getting likely calls/letters. im worried…

Approximately 100/year for Yes-W, so not exactly “every.”

Should we be worried since we have yet to hear from anyone about an interview?

@OverseasFather, if it helps, our son was contacted today to arrange an interview time/date. We’re in California. Also remember that interviews are not required and your S/D app will not be penalized if an interview doesn’t take place.

I applied for “applied mathematics” from an extremely underrepresented country. My grades and test scores were within the range for Yale-- I think my essays and ECs are decent too.
I’ve got interviews from Harvard (with an admission officer), Dartmouth, Princeton, and MIT.
However, I haven’t received an interview offer from Yale yet. Is there anything to worry about? Does Yale screen candidates before offering them interviews?
(PS: My mid-term grades were submitted on February 9th, so my file hasn’t technically been complete up until recently)

  • Does anyone know when Yale will stop sending likely letters?

My son received notification of his Yale likely letter at the end of last month. The regional counselor had several calls to make that day. Given that there are only about 100 of them targeted towards STEM, I suspect those are done.

Yale may send out a small number of other likely letters besides those for athletes and STEM kids, but I know nothing about those.

@MaloMoriQuamFoedari Congrats on your Yale likely letter!!! Can I know when you submitted your application and midyear grades?

@hebegebe congrats on your son’s likely letter!

Thank you.
