Yale Class of 2017 SCEA Discussion thread

Seems like we are all undecided whether SCEA here
I think SCEA is a big pro if you are ready. I read on the Yale Daily News that about 800 applicants were accepted during December admissions. This means that about a half of the class was filled among significantly fewer applicants if we compare them with the RD pool. The admission office says that they are sure that they would admit the same people during RD but I’m not so sure about that, who knows. Then there is the possibility to be deferred so you can “join” also the RD pool. On the other hand, I think that RD is better if you need to fix things to make them perfect for Yale, like SATs, more extracurriculas etc.

I’m going to apply to Yale, Dartmouth, USC (screenwriting program = even more difficult that get into Harvard, dammit :S), and Chapman University, Pennsylvania State, Michigan State as safeties.
I don’t know whether I should consider other Ivies to add. Suggestions?

I’m doing Yale SCEA. I’m spending this summer at a research summer program where you work full-time in a professor’s lab. I may be able to get a publication or award out of my research which would help… crossing my fingers.

I’ll apply RD to MIT, Stanford, Harvard, JHU, Northwestern, WUSTL, Rice, state flagship, and perhaps a couple others.

I think all my bases are covered for the app… just gotta write the damn essays.

How have you all started the common app already?! I thought it opens on August 1st.

@KupLor94
Columbia is pretty good for film, screen writing etc., if that’s a path you are interested in! And @collegekat, you’re right it doesn’t but the essay usually doesn’t change and sometimes schools put there supplements up on their website even before aug 1

Yeah, I’m interest in screenwriting! I’m kind of undecided 'cause I’m passionate about both writing and management, so I’ll apply to two film schools and the others will be generic colleges in order to wait for a master in one of these two fields.
I know that MIT and Cornell have a management major for undergrad but I’m not able to take SATII in math now, which is required by both. In my school in Italy we are not supposed to chose the courses we want to take, they are all required; we have a lot of different kind of schools instead, and I chose one with a lot of humanities (ancient Greek, Latin, Literature, Philosophy etc) but not that much math (2 hours weekly) so I have to be careful with SAT in sciences I guess.

By the way, guys, which is/are your intended major/s?

My intended major is either Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry or Molecular, Cellular, & Developmental Biology.

I intend to double major in either English or journalism and political science or international studies. It depends though, I might go into astrophysics if it’s offered at whichever school I matriculate at.

similarly to litotes, i’m working as an assistant to a professor and his research group (organic chemistry) this summer, now in week four. it has turned out to be a really amazing experience. it’s at yale, too, so i’m pretty stoked about it and hope it will help.

as far as other colleges, i have a random list of places but i haven’t given any of them nearly as much thought as i’ve given yale… i started dreaming about yale and being obsessed early on, and now that it has gotten to the point where everyone is starting to think about colleges and i should be realizing that yale isn’t a likely reality and should start giving more consideration to other places, things are starting to fall into place in really crazy ways…

not really sure as far as a major. something math or science (not bio), possibly engineering, or something like philosophy.

who has started their common apps? who has started the yale supplement?

I’ve started the editing process on both the common application and my Yale supplements. I want in!!! :D

I wrote one, but I definitely don’t like it… so I’m going to write another one ! I already have some ideas for both essays luckily
I saw Yale’s short answers and they didn’t seem tough. I found tougher Priceton’s ones actually. But they may have changed though

I LOVE YALE SO MUCH! Ever since I’ve visited earlier in the year, not a day goes by that I don’t think about the university! I will definitely be applying SCEA to Yale and I’m a prospective chemistry major and possibly also a music major. Just counting down the days until around December 15th when I will find out if I will be attending Yale, have been waitlisted or rejected (hopefully I will be accepted haha).

Aww, another one hopeful here! Welcome!
I so hope we’ll end up at Yale next year! We deserve that, all of us !! Keep our fingers crossed !

Hey everyone! Glad to see that we are already forming a small community haha  I will probably apply SCEA to Yale, but I also really like Columbia. And kuplor, I’m interested in film/screenwriting too! Best of luck <3

@newfavourite seriously? you, too? Are you going to apply to film schools, too, or you’ll keep screenwriting as an eventual master?

@kuplor I’m applying to liberal arts universities with a film major because I want to study other things in college, too. Mostly literature/languages/poly sci. Which is why I’m so in love with Yale  good film major + amazing university!

I understand, and I think it’s my plan too, but I’m still kind of undecided. I’m going to apply to USC and Chapman University for screenwriting, but USC has only 24 spots and both are very expensive since I’m also international, so I’ll try and then see and decide. But if Yale accepts me I will going there anyway <3

My summer’s being spent working at McDonalds. I wish I could’ve done research. :/

I think that things like SCEA improve the chances of getting in for those applicants who are already well-qualified. As the admissions counselors like to tell us, most people who apply to Yale would do well there. SCEA increases your odds to be one of those great students who are lucky enough to win the toss-up.

But I do think that if your qualifications are weak, then you might want to apply RD. Those people applying SCEA are probably slightly better than those in the RD pool, and if you get deferred, your chances of getting in drop A LOT.

I’m going to early-apply somewhere; not sure if it’ll be Yale.

I really would like to apply to Yale SCEA, but it does have the lowest acceptance rate out of all the other ivy leagues ED/SCEA. So I’m really conflicted. But I love Yale the best and their residential college system is kinda like Hogwarts and I loved New Haven. I’m not sure…>.< debating too

Maybe so, but at almost 16% it’s still over 3X the RD rate. Also, you theoretically could get deferred and still have a shot at RD if not accepted EA. IMHO, there is only one reason NOT to apply EA if Yale is your number one choice. That reason would be if you don’t know if you can afford the school and need to compare fin aid offers with other potential schools if accepted.

^Applying EA to Y does not prevent you from comparing FA packages with other schools. It is EA not ED, if accepted you have until May to answer.
