Yale Class of 2018 SCEA Discussion thread

Princeton, columbia or brown plme for me

any HYPMS…although im not applying to MIT

If not Yale, then Penn, Georgetown, or Harvard (I am literally laughing at myself for even thinking to apply to Harvard, though).

Amherst, Columbia and Swarthmore for me!

Good luck to everyone! If we don’t end up at yale, I’m sure we’ll all go to great places :)

This is probably an obvious question, sorry, but if I get deferred do I need to resubmit and repay the fee? Thanks

No, you automatically are put into the RD pool.

Can you decline to be deferred like you can decline to be waitlisted?

Yes. It’s called withdrawing your application. But why would you? Your fees have been paid. Your other decisions will come about the same time as your SCEA Deferred decision. What’s the harm (besides the annoyance to the ego) in remaining in the RD pool?

Just wondering how similar “deferred” was to waitlisting.

Just had my interview. Lasted about 50 minutes, went pretty well. Guy was a lot cooler than I thought he would be and conversation flowed pretty naturally. It was my first interview, so I was a bit nervous at first, but he only asked one question that I paused on.

LOL. What about him made you have such low expectations beforehand if I may ask?

Just had my interview and it seemed to go really well. I was so nervous but he made it really comfortable by meeting just at a Starbucks. Seemed more like a conversation than an interview which helped calm my nerves. Just talked about the things I like and now all I can do is wait

You will be reevaluated during regular decision if deffered. You can only get in if someone chooses not to matriculate if you are waitlisted.

Have any of you had an interviewer who is pretty famous? Mine is pretty famous, which makes me nervous. Also, what did you guys bring to your interview?

How is he famous? That’s awesome…

Probably one of those old guys .

I’m sure y’all have seen this but

Give that Harvard student credit… it is a moderately funny video.

I did not attend either Harvard or Yale, but I did visit both schools while an undergrad, speaking to many undergrads there at the time. And I have researched many websites - including surveys, especially of students, over the past few years… and the issues raised then by Harvard undergrads to me in-person seem to persist to this day many years later. Each high school senior and their parents can come to their own conclusions, but for us - Harvard was never even an option. It may be for grad school, but not for the undergrad experience offered there.

My D has applied to 13 schools in total… 3 safe schools, 4 match schools and 6 reach schools (including Yale SCEA)… but Harvard did not make that cut for many different reasons. It is no question a great school and may be a perfect match for many students, but it simply did not present itself well enough in terms of what is important to us.

For those considering Harvard as well as Yale… you may want to conduct a lot of independent research and especially try to ascertain the opinion of current undergrads at each school. Four years is a long period of time, and quality of life while in college is not to be taken lightly.

Choose Wisely… and Good Luck

My interviewer won an oscar…
