Yale Class of 2019 SCEA Discussion Thread

For anyone who still has an interview, take it from me, there is nothing to worry about. I was super afraid when I had mine because it was on such short notice but when the actual date came I felt super confident. I may have paused to think at times but the alum I got was so energetic and made up for most of that. I fell in love with Yale even more after my interview. I think that may be the reason why I’m so anxious.

@chncsy‌ I absolutely agree. My interview was so much fun, and alums of Yale tend to be so amazing and interesting that they are easy to “click” with. I was uniquely lucky to have an interviewer who shared my precise interests, but even if you have someone with whom you have nothing in common, chances are they will be incredibly nice and understanding. It was absolutely my favorite part of the process, and was one of the most fun conversations I have ever had.

Guys, isn’t interview deadline over? Those of us, who haven’t received interview calls yet, aren’t likely to receive interviews in the next two weeks, right?

ouch :expressionless: Does Yale interview International students as frequently as it does US students?

^definitely not, there simply aren’t enough international alumni to interview the international pool that is spread out over 190+ countries.

I also agree with you, @gravitas2‌

My feeling about a lot of the talk surrounding the Harvard applicants is that they are applying there because it is perceived as “the best” and much of their self-image is linked with also being seen that way based on where they matriculate to college. A whole lot of striving, but without much self-examination. Yes, that is an overly broad brush and doesn’t apply to everyone - but it seems to fit at least a subset of Harvard applicants who spend a lot of time on CC.

ha, ha @gravitas - and that same trait continues on for those that are ultimately accepted

@baltimoreguy hahahahahaha what

I don’t generally have a very clear impression of what people who attended any particular school are like, but since it seems that everyone who attends or attended Harvard lets me know within ten minutes of meeting them, I have an opinion as to what they’re like. Maybe there are also stealth Harvard grads… I’m not inclined to think so :)

@baltimoreguy You can’t deny that Yale also has a name brand, and that it’s also considered as the “very best” along with Princeton, Stanford etc… I don’t know all the names because I’m an international applicant, and I am not very familiar with American colleges - so you do have a point (name recognition). I also think that “top schools applicants” are all striving in a way or another, because we’re reaching for the very best. Also, more generally, we can’t deny that most things we do in life are for recognition. We constantly seek someone’s look, approval, consideration or praise. That’s simply how most human beings in society behave. My question for you now is : Why did you choose Yale ?

@IxnayBob “I don’t generally have a clear impression” well then maybe you shouldn’t be stating your opinion. Only speak if you have something to say. Generalizing an entire school is quite immature. None of us have gotten in yet and this is already happening? Grow up.

@baltimoreguy What exactly makes you think that? It seems to me the Yale thread members are the high and mighty ones. Oh, but of course Yale applicants are pure and have never thought of reputation blah blah blah. Get over yourself.

Why don’t you just respect both schools and students?

@entrebusecon, we don’t need to get into a squabble, but you should read what I said, not what you think I said. I said that I have a pretty clear impression of what H grads are like, as a group, allowing that I might perhaps not have known that some H grads had in fact attended. I said that I didn’t have a similarly clear idea of other schools.

In any case, it was said as a bit of Yale vs Harvard nonsense. I know you’re stressed, but lighten up.

For the record, I have many friends and children of friends who attend H currently or have attended in the past. Most of them are wonderful, intelligent, earnest people. I would be lying if I didn’t say that most of them wear the affiliation to H on their sleeves more than has been my experience at other schools. There are worse things in life (being overly sensitive to perceived slights being one of them).

@entrebusecon‌ There’s no need to get riled up. Seeing as no ivy early decisions have come out, we don’t need to fight over schools we just might (emphasis on might) get into.

@entrebusecon‌ having a difference of opinion is okay, but please deal with other members with a little more civility. IxnayBob is a well respected adult whose son is currently at Yale and you don’t really have the right to call him immature. Respect for your elders is a sign of maturity.

Results on 16th Right?

Last year I applied Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Duke only. I was rejected by all besides Yale, Yale waitlisted me, this is why this year I applied with ED to Yale thinking that they had good opinion about me, I really hope and want to be accepted because this is my 2nd gap year and I am now 18. IBICBA

My profile is very historical. Who knows about the Eljuis? Eljui clan? Does anyone also know what my profile picture means?

A fellow that I work with and that I have known for over 20 years I only found out was a Harvard grad last year and in this context. me"Gosh I’m not looking for someone in the caliber of Editor of the Harvard Law Review" him "well I WAS editor of the Law Review…and…"conversation carried on. I was really surprised this hadn’t come out over the oh I don’t know, many years I’d known him! I had a billion questions, was super impressed with his modesty and learned a lot

@oldladyandmom, and there you have it. :). The problem of course is that I don’t know how many Harvard grads I know without knowing where they went to school. I found out that some people at the gym whom I’ve worked out with for years had gone to Yale, but I only discovered it because they’d asked about DS’s plans. Once they found out, they gushed with warm feelings for the school.

No one is paying attention to me :((

@eljui7 i tried to google it to figure out the answer (I am a trivia nerd) and found nothing. How about you just tell us the historical significance? (Maybe that will help to get the thread back in a positive focus after those H folks tried to incite a fight!)
