Yale Class of 2020 applicants

@glasshours Although her gpa was quite high and her test scores were very competitive, my daughter who is now a Yale student was #4 in a small regional public HS. There is more to a Yale student than the best grades and highest test scores.

Just submitted! Best of luck to everyone

Did you guys get a confirmation email yet?

OMG, I’m soo nervous about applying to yale. I’m not a top student but I feel like I have a strong application. I want to go into engineering. Hopefully, I will have a good chance. FINGERS CROSSED

@APScholar18 - I didn’t. Anyone else?

I applied SCEA about a week ago. Anyone else apply SCEA?
I so hope we all get in!

I got an email from them with my info to access my application status.

When you hear admission result, post!

@freenfly - How many days after you submitted did you receive an email?

submitted the restricted EA app last week. Has anybody received calls from Alumni for Interview

@IbanezA , I think it’ll be a while before we hear for the interviews. I am pretty sure they first go through the applications and then they will assign regional alumnis.

@glasshours I got my application ID number and all that about 1 day after submitting the common app.

I have received no contact for an interview yet.

My son received his Yale email 9 or 10 days after submitting his application.

My guess for interviews is that on/about Nov. 2, Admissions outputs a list of all completed SCEA applications, divides them up by region, and then sends them to the regional alumni coordinator who then provides alumni interviewers with the contact info for the students they will interview. And then the individual alumni will contact the students. So - just guessing - I think you might hear something late in the first week of November, or early the week after that.

You could probably look back in this forum and find threads about SCEA interviews to see when people were contacted last year.

Where are you all from?

My daughter applied SCEA last Saturday (10/17) and was contacted by a local alum on Tuesday (10/20) to schedule an interview! (That was fast!) She is being interviewed this afternoon. Let’s hope all goes well.

Alumni interviews are currently being assigned. My region started assigning them ~ Oct 18th or so. For those who reside in areas with many alums, expect an email (check your spam folders), text, or phone.

At the risk of sounding paranoid… I’m curious how much value is placed on the alum interview report for an applicant that already has a likely letter. My kid applied SCEA in mid Sept (she’s a recruited athlete) and received her LL in early Oct. I was under the impression that the next big date would be Dec 15th. So, I was surprised to learn that she was contacted by a local alumna for an interview. Of course my kid jumped on the opportunity to meet her and she is super excited about the upcoming interview - whenever she gets anything “Yale-related” she runs around the house screaming of joy! It’s actually pretty comical! Her interview is scheduled for this Friday, my kid cannot wait to meet this alumna and I’m excited for her, but I’m also sitting here scratching my head. Thoughts?

I’m pretty sure that the alumni interviews and LL process are asynchronous, and clearly in your case the LL process does not wait for an interview report. In my kid’s case, she was told by her future coach that admissions was issuing her LL the day after her alumni interview–I’m guessing, but the alum probably had not yet submitted a report at that point.

@rennie17-Thank you for sharing! For whatever reason I thought my kid would just ‘miss out’ on the alumni interview since it didn’t happen before she received her LL.

@SoftballFan , my counselor has told me that in a case like yales, alumni interviews are just a placeholder in your application. It is not something that has an extreme value. There are some colleges, where interviews determine if a student makes it-such as MIT. But since Yale cannot Guarantee every single applicant an interview, they use it to narrow down applicants that have the same application structure. For example, student a and student b’s application looks to be of the same value (same grades, same test scores, same level of EC). If they only have room to place one student, they Will reference the alumni interviews. Then they will decide which applicant can provide more to the community of the college.

This is what my counselor has told me, as he once was on a board of college admissions. Also, considering that Yale cant offer EVERY SINGLE person an interview, this explanation seems to make sense.

@Xboxgamergirl - Your counselor’s take on this makes sense to me as well! Thank you for sharing!

Good luck to a you kiddos! And know that admitted/not admitted…you are worthy! You will find your place to call home.
