Yale Class of 2020 applicants

Son just got notice of LL today. Wondering if interview is to follow? I just assumed everyone gets interview but considering how many apply that may not be feasible…

My DD, also a “likely letter” recipient, has her interview on tomorrow.

Interesting look in the Yale Daily News about all the planning that is going into gauging the two new residential colleges’ impact on Yale:

It seems certain to me that there will be some growing pains, particularly for the first group of freshmen who will make up the Class of 2021. On the other hand, there will be 200 more freshmen who get to be a part of Yale, so I imagine any growing pains will be more than worth it!

@SoftballFan The LL trumps everything. Frankly don’t get upset if the interview offer gets withdrawn – many area directors are starving for open interview slots and may not “waste” one with your child given the 100s of others where an interview might make a difference. It won’t in your daughter’s case. It’s not that Yale (or your local alumni group) aren’t doing backflips getting your daugther’s attention – but she’s in and it would take a whole lot for that to change. Area interview directors might not feel the freedom to direct an interviewer your daughter’s direction. FYI

@T26E4 - Thanks for the heads up! The alumni interview is scheduled for tomorrow. So far, no word of cancellation… We’ll see if it ends up happening. Thanks again!

Just submitted! Does anyone know when should I be expecting an e-mail from Yale to set up my account?

MY son submitted last Friday and got email on Tuesday.

Can anybody tell me what LL means?

In this context, Likely Letter. It’s too late for Little League.

Haha, thats literally what I thought when I saw LL mentioned earlier. so what does The Likely Letter mean?

@Xboxgamergirl
Don’t feel bad. My son’s guidance counselor didn’t know what is was either

Haha, thanks. But I get that it stands for likely letter, but what is a likely letter?

LL are given to student athletes being recruited for a spot that have passed academic pre-read. Ivys do them but not sure about other schools.

They assure a candidate that they have been admitted EA/ED by the admissions department.

Oh okay, so it doesn’t concern me if I am just applying as a student?

@Xboxgamergirl. - Since Ivys don’t offer athletic scholarships, a LL let’s the recruited athlete know that they are “likely” to be admitted. This is the Ivys’ way to ensure highly competitive athletes don’t accept earlier offers from other Ivy League schools or other non-Ivy D1 programs (like Pac-12, etc).
If interested to find out more, you can just google it, there’s tons on info online about Likely Letters and what they mean. Btw, they’re not only given out to recruited athletes. Every year, they’re given out to a select group of applicants.

Oh! Awesome! Thanks for the info!!

@Xboxgamergirl. - Yup! You would have known by now if it applied to you.

I didn’t submit my application in though. I’m submitting it tomorrow

@Xboxgamergirl, LL are sometimes sent to non-athletic recruits, but they’re as rare as hen’s teeth. Not getting one means nothing.
