Most people I know think that Yale is a really competitive school where people are hardly ever collaborative and are constanly worried about their class rank. I've heard Yale commonly referred to as the opposite of Brown in terms of atmosphere. Brown = laid-back and collaborative while Yale = really competitive and stressed out. Can anyone verify this? Is Yale really competitive and anti-collaborative or is this a common misperception?

Huh?

Yale = cut-throat competitive? Are we talking about the same Yale? The New Haven one, right? People are very relaxed there, don't worry. The current students on the Yale admitted students site have so much to say about the co-operative atmosphere at Yale and how much they've been inspired by their classmates.

I thought Yale didn't even have a class rank.

My daughter says it's not cut-throat at all. No one compares grades or anything. The only thing that is a bit competitive is getting into the more prestigious acapella choral groups, as they only take a finite number of kids. But academically, no, not competitive.

does class rank in college really matter as long as you have a good individual GPA?

we don't care about our ranking, since we don't have one.
we do care about GPA.
as i saw on MTV's The U- "Yalies are not known to be competitive with each other, just with themselves." "Intense intellectual student, who don't hate each other".
