Yale Countdown to Move-in for 2017 Class

48 days left and I don't know about you but I have lots of questions and I don't want to look back at info from 2005 and wonder if it is still accurate. So with little time to lose, here is a thread for everyone with a question re transition from home to Yale.
I'll start - if attending a pre-orientation program, I hear there is a hotel the group stays at the night before, but I can not find any information on that. Can someone tell me where to look? My thanks to all who post and answer on this thread.

my daughter (2015) was in FOOT (6 day) and we dropped her off in the afternoon. They spent the night in rooms on Old Campus and left first thing the next morning.

Harvest started at noon at the Yale Farm. It was a bit of a challenge getting in that morning early enough by plane to reach Yale but doable. There is no pre-arranged hotel component of any of the pre-orientation programs.

^^ Not so much pre-arranged, but Yale DID say in my FOOT confirmation e-mail that it prefers that students who arrive a day early for the program stay at the local Marriott, reservations for which Yale will arrange if the student sends a check for $50.

That’s all I know.

Thank you. I think that may apply only to Foot. I asked Harvest and thy said thy are setting add couches - I guess in a residence hall. I saw that Yale extended the deadline for per-orientation trips. I do hope they are well enrolled.

My son is participating in the Cultural Connections program. Would it be better for him to bring 2 suitcases full of “stuff” as I read that they are housed in Lanman Wright and that is also his dorm (5th floor - so not in the 7 x 11 rooms)? I did read that there is no guarantee that he will have his actual room as they house by sex by floor. I don’t want him to have too much, but it would be helpful if he had two suitcases. Also, does anyone know if there are overhead lights in Lanman Wright?

Idk re the lights. Maybe it will be easy to bring along his property and just move in the next day. My S is doing Harvest and so he is not bringing things. We are trying to find out if he will even have a bureau.

Can someone confirm that if we send parcels by UPS that we are to put the name of the college ( not the freshman residence) on the address? The Yale info says that but it seems weird.

@areyoutheone: We found the mail situation very confusing last year. The reason you would not use the freshman residence hall address is that mail is not delivered there. You will need to rent a P.O. box.

This seems to be the most recently updated info, which is in line with what my son ultimately learned to do:

[Yale University Mail Service](http://www.yale.edu/campusmail/StudentMail.htm)

But I see this is NOT consistent with what is on the Freshman website:

[Mail and Shipping | Yale College](http://yalecollege.yale.edu/content/mail-and-shipping)

It says on the bottom of this page that UPS will ship to 143 Elm St., but my son was told to use 206 Elm St. and his box number for any packages requiring a street address. This is what he did the rest of the year.

It was also our experience that the P.O. was very backed up during the opening couple of weeks of school, with long lines to pick up packages. I don’t know if items sent well ahead of time to coincide with the opening days of school were handled better as we did not do that.

Sounds better to just bring it by plane with us. With his super tiny double room we can’t send much anyway!!

This what my son has used for two years without issue:
First Name Last Name
206 ELM ST # XXXXXX (PO Box number)
NEW HAVEN, CT 06511-9992
United States

The UPS packages will be delivered to the post office and the student will receive a notice in their box when the package arrives and is available for pick-up. Using this address configuration allows you to use the Amazon Prime 2 Day shipping as normally Amazon will not ship 2 day to PO Boxes.

I hear it is Verizon. Any thoughts?

My S is arriving at 4 on 8/17. Would rather not wait 2 hrs to catch the CT shuttle & arrive at campus after dark. So is anyone interested in sharing a private car? If so PM me.

Anyone doing OIS?
