Yale Eli Whitney Program Fall 2019!!

@randomandwitty Thank you - you had me worried there for a minute

@trg2010 Thank you, with each application we tried to include each other so that the colleges were clear on our connection because we wouldn’t go anywhere that didn’t take both of us, but at the same time we are aware that it is a massive reach, both getting in to a top school, and we have totally different majors.

@sproutedchiapet Thank you! So much has changed since last year, I’ve added so much to my application. I’m super excited about applying to the Eli Whitney again next year. The only thing that will change that is if I get accepted somewhere I love this round. I definitely wanted to be on this thread because I want to give support to people. I think this is one of the most exciting programs. I really have my hopes on Wellesley, Princeton and Stanford.

@IndirectProofs those are all awesome choices. I was concerned about applying too early, but did it for the potential feedback. Did you apply to those this round or are you waiting for next year?

@sproutedchiapet I applied to all of those (and more) this round! I got waitlisted at Williams College, but that’s all of the news I’ve heard. I also applied to Cornell, Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Bryn Mawr and Hamilton.

@IndirectProofs Yay! Congratulations on making it to the waitlist… if anything, it’s a sign of a strong application. I also applied to Princeton this round and their process seems like the most mysterious lol… but their questions were fun.

@sproutedchiapet Thank you. I do feel good about making the waitlist! Last year I had all rejections so it feels nice! You are right about the Princeton transfer process. I feel like I have a strong application but I also know that the competition is high. I loved the questions they were the most natural for me to answer. Fingers crossed for us !

I received a response email with an exact date and time for my interview. I was asked to send a midterm report and a scan of my DD-214 (veterans only).

That’s a good sign!

My fingers are crossed for all of you. I can’t wait to welcome the new Yalies to our community!

Hi, guys!

Prospective applicant here. Under Application Instructions for the program, it mentions “Two essays/personal statements” and “Short answers to three additional questions”, so what do the prompts say exactly? I can only see the prompts for freshman application (e.g. “You are teaching a Yale course. What is it called?”, “Think about an idea or topic that has been intellectually exciting for you. Why are you drawn to it?”). Do they ask you those short questions as well for the EWSP application?

Best of luck to all of you who applied this year!

Hey @spivotal Looking at their website, I don’t think the one for next year is open yet… so I don’t know that the three questions would be the same for the fall application next year. The other two are basically Why Yale’s EWSP and a personal statement describing what you did during the time that you were not in college. They both had a 600 word limit. Hope this helps!

@sproutedchiapet Thank you! Since they sound pretty general, I’m assuming they’re going to be pretty much the same each year? And what about the "short answers to three additional questions"ones?

Hey Everyone! I got an email from Yale today about an admissions decision in my portal: I was rejected.
I was not requested to interview, and the rejection specified that this was after the first round of decisions… so I’m guessing that if you have or are getting an interview, there is no way to tell until the final decision comes out.

Good luck to everyone still in the running! This program looks incredible… I just wish I could’ve gotten more feedback as to why I did not make the first round.
My fingers are crossed for the other programs I applied to… I’ll post the template thingy here in a minute in case it would be useful for anyone now or in the future.

Serious congratulations to everyone still in the running and to everyone who applied… going for this alone takes incredible character and it’s aiming this high with our ambitions means that we’ll eventually land somewhere awesome

Reflection

Strengths: Writing, personal strength/character, high-intellect, grit/ambition
Weaknesses: Math (I’m good at it, but haven’t taken a math class in well over a decade and that definitely showed on my ACT score), lack of college experience, lack of EC’s (I work a lot so it’s hard to find time :/)

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The application pool is highly competitive and filled with awesome folks… but also not enough experience in college yet, weak in math, maybe too much confidence? also I probably didn’t ‘hedge’ enough in my essays.
What would you have done differently?: Started my applications earlier! I didn’t realize I had a shot at such schools until last December so I had to rush and take the ACT, do the applications and maintain my 4.0
Where else did you apply?
Dartmouth, Brown (RUE), Harvard and Princeton

**Other Factors: **
My story was about overcoming severe trauma as a kid and having undiagnosed ADHD until last year (though looking back its a bit obvious on my high school assessment tests which were off the charts for everything except those relating to focus, which were literally at the bottom).
I was very vague about my trauma, which I thought was the right way to approach it… I have no idea how it impacted my decision.
Because of the trauma/adhd, I did terrible in high school and skipped a lot of my last years. I graduated in 05, so I hope that, considering my situation, it did not hurt me… but when the pool is so competitive, those little things might matter.

General Comments & Advice:
“Failure” is simply there to tell you that you have to look for success somewhere else or try for it in another way… it’s really cliche, but so many people fear failure and rejection (I’m not immune either!) and it’s never a judgement on who we are because it’s impossible to be good or right for everything… it’s just a sort of mirror that reflects strengths and weaknesses… the important part is learning them and playing to those strengths!

Also, start early! Just not too early that it wont be relevant by time you submit.

For what it is worth, I learned so much from when I was rejected; especially about writing my essays. Like, if I get accepted into a top program this year I know for fact it will be because of this one rejection that taught me so much. And now that it’s been a year, so many amazing things have happened and as I said before, I still look forward to applying in 2020!

@IndirectProofs did you get specific feedback from a program about your essays or how you could improve… or more that you learned from your own reflection of the process?

Yes, I was able to get feedback, but I did it in sort of a round about way. Good luck with your other programs!

Have they mentioned a decision date? Looks like most of their peer schools release this week

My interviewer mentioned something about an admissions committee meeting on May 9th so I presume we will hear after that
