What is the Yale fine arts department like? Would it be a good fit for someone interested in illustration?

It is just my opinion, Yale will be really good choice, since it provide broad and deep humanity education plus Art.
I was told in a long run creativity will make artist standout. All the art school limit student from philosophy, political, foreign language …

wuhan, Yale’s school of art is highly respected, especially the graduate school, but the undergraduate program is good too. I wouldn’t consider it a destination for illustration, although they do offer a concentration in graphic design and plenty of drawing classes in general. Yale’s focus would be on theory, concept and creativity within the context of a liberal arts education.

You may or may not be aware that students applying for admission to Yale apply to the liberal arts college with everyone else. Students apply for acceptance to the art major at the end of their sophomore year after they’ve taken required introductory courses.

Acceptance to Yale College would be based first and foremost on grades, rank and scores. Art portfolios can be submitted as supplementary materials, and are evaluated by the art department, but art talent and involvement is considered much the same as any extracurricular, not as a requirement for entry.

momrath, do you know if the graphic design concentration is any good? like compared to schools like carnegie mellon…I applied for art major at yale but would actually prefer graphic design (sadly they only offer it in the graduate program) and i am worried that even if i concentrate on graphic design the course would be to fine-arty…does anyone have any ideas? thanks!

If you study art/graphic design at Yale you will most likely have to go on and get a Master’s. There is a difference between a BA and BFA (which Carnegie Mellon grants in Design). A BFA requires MANY more studio art classes than a BA. A BA requires many more liberal arts classes. That is not to say you could not become a graphic designer by going to Yale. You just might not get enough experience to get a job right out of school. Look at their course offerings and you will be able to tell how many classes in graphic design they even offer.

thanks drae27!
