Yale NROTC letter

I never really considered myself Ivy material (95th percentile in class, but not number 1, 34 ACT, a bit boring), but today I got a letter that was handsigned by Yale’s Senior NROTC and AFROTC instructors and they say they’re interested in me. Is this something that is just marketing? Or is this letter somewhat unique? Also, does anyone know if NROTC has any impact on admissions?

The two signatures are different colored.

They want you to investigate them. Unless you get a paid invitation to visit campus, consider it simply outreach and marketing – like the bajillions of other mailers I’m sure you’re receiving

Since you’re considering USNA and NJROTC anyway, see if Yale interests you. But it’s not a special “in” per se. Good luck.

Thank you, T26E4

I wouldnt be so quick to dismiss it. I was not aware that the NROTC unit sent out these letters. The process is that you apply for the NROTC appointment to Yale (and four other colleges) and then you either receive the appointment or not. If you receive an appointment to Yale from the Navy then you apply like everyone else. In my experience, this is a significant boost in your chances to being admitted to Yale. Getting the appointment can be as hard as getting in Yale. You can join NROTC without an appointment but you will pay full tuition and it more than likely will not significantly improve your chances of admission.

I agree that Yale would like the OP to consider an NROTC appointment. But he/she hasn’t even applied for one. Yale NROTC wants to gin up interest. If OP investigates and is interested – which leads to the application of an appointment, I fully agree that it can be a big boost.

But as it is so far, it appears only to be marketing material.

Oh no, I’ve already sent my NROTC package in to Pensacola. Nervously twiddling thumbs atm.

Good luck. Did you list Yale as one of your schools?

@wchatar2 Nope lmao. I always thought I would never stand a chance of making the cut. I’m not really sure how they found me, as I don’t recall listing NROTC or anything really on my ACT

But in the event that I do get the scholarship and get into Yale, I can get my scholarship transfered, or so I’ve been told.

That may be true. My assumption is that it would depend on what tier your intended major is.

@wchatar2 Well I was reassured today about being able to transfer my major since I picked Chem and my PO1 says I’m extremely competitive for the scholarship with my current stats. I suppose it’s just a matter of crossing my fingers and waiting. @-)
