Hi guys, I only recently found this forum for Yale-NUS. Is there a way to appeal to Yale-NUS? First of all, the portal says I didn’t submit my SAT and ACT scores, but I was sure my counselors had submitted them (I can’t submit any because I’m low-income. Basically, my counselors would have some waivers they authorize.). Second of all, what is this interview? How come I never received an email about it or any information about it from the admissions counselor? Thank you all so much! Congratulations to all who got accepted!!!
@kchen0514 To the best of my knowledge YNC doesn’t do appeals at all… But your case sounds unique! You might be able to fix it if you email admissions to ask why they didn’t recieve your SAT, ACT scores!
@kchen0514 I’m assuming you applied for round 1 and did not have the scores sent. I actually did not send my scores through the testing agency too; I had my counsellor equip it in her report. It worked fine when I told Yale-NUS that.
Interviews were only for shortlisted applicants. Given your circumstances, maybe try explaining about issue with the score and see if they could reconsider you for round 2?
All the best.
does the school inform candidates if they have not made the short list? is it possible they have yet to shortlist more people?
Hello! I was recently accepted to Yale NUS, however, my counselor took one look at its world ranking and called it subpar to the other colleges I was accepted to (Davidson College, University of Rochester). I know that the school is still relatively new and yet has both fantastic students and teachers alike. However, I am still a bit curious to why it is so lowly ranked (5055). What do you guys think?
@sashster it’s likely that they’re still in the process of shortlisting people. either way, they won’t inform you if you haven’t made the shortlist until results are out
@Rich123456 It really depends on what ranking you were looking at. In general, YNC - like you said - is a fairly new college and so it’s entirely possible that there’s just not enough information regarding graduate employment numbers etc. However, a recent survey done shows that YNC graduates are highly sought after in the marketplace (https://www.yale-nus.edu.sg/newsroom/first-cohort-of-yale-nus-graduates-highly-sought-after-in-the-marketplace/#_ftnref3). It’s really up to you what college you’d like to go to, but don’t trust rankings whole-heartedly, especially with regards to a new school! If you can, you should come down to EYW to experience the college yourself and see how you feel!
Thanks for the advice! I personally love the school, so I was in a bit of a dilemma.
Hello, sorry to barge in. I have currently started 12th grade in India and looking to apply to Yale-NUS for the class of 2023. I was just wondering, is it necessary to mention a major while applying or is it fine if it’s undecided?
@thesuhas they ask you for your first and second major choices but there’s also an option for undecided so it should be completely fine if you’re undecided
@thesuhas if you are really really really undecided, then I think it’s okay to mark undecided. Otherwise, I would try to choose something before applying. Your choice is nonbinding, so you can even say you want to do literature and end up doing physical sciences. But it’s always good to show a passion. If you can think of a field of study you like and think about how you could help others or generate new knowledge by studying this area at Yale-NUS, you will have a lot more to talk about on your essays and interview, and you may have more chances of getting in.
(I actually seriously considered applying undecided, but then I talked with other people who had gone through the application process and read this article http://admissions.tufts.edu/blogs/inside-admissions/post/dont-apply-undecided/ and changed my mind)
I think Davidson and U Rochester are subpar Unis. Uni of Rochester is a safety school and Davidson is a school no one has heard of. I got into Vanderbilt and Grinnell but rejected from Yale NUS. Yale NUS has Yale and NUS as partners and it has a lot of money to spend on students. If those two are your choices, you should be going to Yale NUS anyway.
@Rich123456 I definitely would not consider Yale-NUS a subpar school. The ranking is low because we aren’t just relatively new, but REALLY new. Considering that we are going against universities with only our 6th batch of students coming in, the stats just aren’t there for us to compete. For example, our first report regarding employment rates came out only this year, as our inaugural class just graduated!
Our parent school NUS, is ranked as one of the top 15 in the world (i think it was #11), and our school comes with many of its own perks-- partnerships, opportunities, education etc. Not to mention, the employment rate and place of occupation for our inaugural class is quite impressive!
If you still aren’t reassured, there are many students here who rejected top liberal art colleges and ivy league universities to study here – myself included. Regardless of the university, while I understand the inclination, rankings are very superficial in representing any school. Please do not let a number characterize any of your choices! If you have any concerns, feel free to PM me, or ask the many Round 1 admits about why they are excited to come here!
@thesuhas students at Yale-NUS don’t declare a major until the end of their second year. The question is mostly for the admissions team to get to know more about you and your interests! You are in no way obligated to actually major in what you put down, so I encourage you to just put whatever you are interested in, instead of undecided, as there is no harm!
The world ranking doesn’t do Yale-NUS any justice, just last year in their inaugural batch they had a rhodes scholar!
@Nepali123 Lol, I had the EXACT same mindset honestly. My counselors found some obscure ranking system that showed that NUS had a ranking of around 45~ and called it a school that she disapproved of too. In my own humble opinion, Yale- NUS is far superior to the other schools that I was accepted to.
@sghml9 I found it ironic that my counselor made such assumptions based on the school rank (since she’s always telling her students that ranks mean nothing). Based on my research about the school, Yale-NUS seems like the best “fit” and the best option for me.
Has anyone been getting interview offers? I was asked to send in my results on 25th march but haven’t gotten any updates ever since which is quite nerve wracking! It’s been a week and a half :((
@jyjyjy I received my interview offer a month and a half after sending my app (and I got in), so I’m sure you’re fine :). The less you worry about it, the sooner it comes!
@amendoim thank you for the reassurance!! hahaha i have to say that it is very heartening to hear that you got in despite waiting so long. maybe it’s time for me to close this college confidential tab for a bit and stop obsessing >:D<
Hello guys! Did anyone receive their interviews yet for Round 2? I saw in their website that the deadline for the financial aid documents is on April 13 but you first have to be shortlisted in order to pass the documents.
