Hi Guys!
I’ve recently been accepted to both Yale-NUS and University of South Carolina (USC) but now is the time to choose. As of now I am looking into an internationalized approach in terms of an Economics Degree. For USC, I received a pretty good scholarship (instate tuition as well as another scholarship) and got admitted into their Capstone Scholars program; economically, USC is the better choice. In terms of Yale-NUS, I did not receive any merit scholarship and have yet to have a financial aid packet returned; prestige-wise, Yale-NUS is the better choice. Recently, I have been reading articles published a few years back about Yale-NUS’ fallout in terms of their curriculum and that is concerning. What is holding me back is the financial aspect. Yale-NUS is based on the prestige of its parental schools but is more of a reach in terms of finances, while USC is a average school but gives me great financial opportunity in the future.
If anyone could enlighten me on either college, from either personal or anecdotal experience, I would be grateful.
I was wondering ya’ll opinion on which school you think would be the best investment.
Thanks! Also, I wish all of you guys the best in your endeavors!
Congratulations on both of your choices. I noticed your post because I currently am pursuing a MLIS online through USC. I have had good experiences so far, with very well-qualified professors, but I can’t really comment on your program. However I have son who attended a state university and was able to graduate debt-free and go straight onto grad school, whereas many of his friends who attended expensive private colleges could not attend grad school right away due to student loan debt. So finances are definitely worth considering. Have you visited both? If not, definitely try to visit and see how you feel while you are there… I bet you’ll come away with a stronger sense of commitment. Good luck! I’m sure either one will be a good choice if you make the best of your opportunity.
@ThinkUp Where did you end up going? We were in a similar situation with Univ of South Carolina Honors School with good merit scholarship, UC Berkeley (state tuition) and Stanford (full pay). Our kid decided to go to Stanford because he got into a very nice study abroad gap year program, and Stanford encourages its admitted students to take gap years, whereas public colleges such as Berkeley and Univ of South Carolina make you apply again for admission and any scholarships.
