Yale SCEA Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

Do you think guidance counselors find out in advance of decisions? Even if they don’t have a strong relationship with the regional rep?

@SkipWoosnam I was wondering the same thing!

@y90y90 Princeton SCEA is way less popular at my school too

@colleges321 I have seen a few videos where kids are finding out online at school and being filmed as they get their decision – usually looks like it’s in a school office. I doubt they would record a kid reading their result online if they knew if was bad news. But even if some counselors do find out, not sure all have that kind of relationship with the colleges.

@Memmsmom @SkipWoosnam While it is possible that the acceptance rate could go down, but I think not probable for the following reasons:

  1. The above article was written 4 days after the Nov 1 deadline
  2. Applications for the SCEA went up by about 9%, while the expected number of admits will be going up more than that

Anyhow, given we are talking about around +/- 1%, it doesn’t matter

@SkipWoosnam @colleges321 Counselors do not find out. That’s too much risk that the decision gets out before the most important people find out, the students themselves. It’s no one’s business. Are there some counselors with the depth of relationship w/their Yale rep? I imagine for some “feeder” schools, YES. And there’s probably a tacit understanding – but that’s a protected relationship and the counselor wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize that – for the sake satisfying a nervous kid.

@T26E4 Do you know if Yale sends out snail mail decisions as well after December 15th? Do they only do it for accept/reject, or do deferrals get a letter?

Does anybody know how to contact the Office of Admissions through email? Can’t seem to find an email address.
Thanks!

(203) 432-9316 is the phone number, I didn’t see an email either, though I’m sure there is one @omwtocollege230

You can send an email but you need to do it through their website format; I also couldn’t find a straight up address

@elijaheliot To those admitted, of course Yale will send them a full package (and any Fin Aid award) with various info. I don’t know if deferrees get a letter. If they don’t check their online decisions, I suppose Yale will mail them something. Rejected students who check the online decision do not get a letter. If they don’t access their online decision, then they’ll get a formal rejection letter

Wait, if I do my interview over this weekend–will it be used for early decisions?

@tomatox1 - you are unnecessarily worrying about the interview and the decision date. Be happy you got the interview scheduled and just go for it. Would you be your best only if it someone on CC confirmed that it matters for the decision?

@tomatox1 To answer your question, no… The interview reports were due by Dec. 1, so it won’t factor in to your Early Action decision. Although, if you get deferred, it will factor into your decision, but BARELY. The interview doesn’t have a lot of weight in the admissions process…

1 week…

I’ve been too distracted lately about upcoming decisions next week. So near yet so far. :open_mouth:

@DreamforIvy That is not totally correct. Yes, the interview reports were due December 1, but many people, myself included, were interviewed after December 1. In these cases, Yale made it a point for the interviewers to set up interviews with the applicants as soon as possible and to send in the report immediately- probably within one day. @tomatox1 your interview is definitely in a crunch, so maybe it will/maybe it won’t be attached to your application in time? However, if your interviewer immediately writes a report and sends it in, I would imagine that it will be attached.

Does anyone know, in general, when the decisions are made? If the release date is 12/15, when does the committee finishes their final decision?

@4beardolls, I know nothing of the AO process, but having worked in many organizations, my guess is that the final decisions are made minutes before the deadline.

Last year, about a day before (or maybe it was a few hours before, I can’t remember) SCEA decisions were released, people on the Yale SCEA thread were all trying out the link that I posted above. Most people would see a 403 Forbidden message that said “This Portal is only for admitted students”, while a few people were able to see a message that said “Welcome to Class of 2020!” and other additional information. People were wondering if this was this was a leak, like it was a portal that admitted students are permitted access to once they get in; many ppl thought it could be a good sign but def not 100% sure. After the decisions came out, it turned out that the people who were able to access this portal early ended up being admitted, so it was probably legit.

Maybe we should bookmark this website and start trying it out 1-2 days before December 15th?
