Yale SCEA or Columbia ED???

Hey, I am stuck between which college to apply to, as I want the "safest" options. I am an Asian Male from NY.

Competitive Private School (honors and AP level classes)
UW GPA - 97.2
Self studied 5 APs and got 4's and 5's on all of them (English Language, Cal AB, Chemistry, Biology, European History)
Top 5% of Grade
National Honor Society
National Merit Commended Probably (209)

ACT - 35
SAT = 2280 (800 M, 710 CR, 770 W)
SAT Chem - 800, Biology - 750, Math 2 - 800

Summer Experiences - Ross Mathematics Program, Internship at Hospital in Dubai, Volunteer at School for Retarded Children in India

Speech and Debate - Captain, Advanced to Semifinal Round at States, 2nd at Dual-Regionals (2 regions), 2 Time National Qualifier, NFL Degree of Special Distiniction

Yearbook - Business Editor for 2 years; Bronze Medal Empire State Association; Scholastic Press Award for Best Business Section in competition (out of over 2000 entries)

Band - (Tenor and Soprano Saxophone) Area All-State, Concert Band First Chair every year, Jazz Band First Chair every year, Pep Band Section Leader, Paid musician for a private company (small time though; about 80 dollars an hour), Give lessons.

Hospital Volunteers (engineering department) = Over 400 Hours; various service awards; Executive Committee (School leadership position)

Communications Club [President]= basically it's a Live TV Broadcast for about 15 minutes every morning at our school, giving news, schedule, important EC info, etc.

My main hobby is guitar, mainly in the styles of John Petrucci, Jeff Loomis, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, etc. I practice about ten hours a week and I am including music supplements of "Technical Difficulties" by Racer X and "Universal Mind" by Liquid Tension Experiment.

Neither is anywhere close to safe for an Indian candidate from a NY private school.

“School for ■■■■■■■■ Children”
What a badass school name.

I would say you have a decent chance at either one. However, you might have a slightly better chance of getting in at Columbia.

First off, you will be a strong applicant at both schools.

It depends on how you define safe. Your chances of getting into Columbia ED are better than Yale SCEA. And your chances of getting into Columbia are better if you apply ED. So, from an acceptance point of view, applying ED to Columbia is the “safer” choice (but certainly not a guarantee as these schools are so competitive).

If money is an issue, then the safer choice is to apply SCEA early action to Yale. You are committed to go to Columbia if you get in ED, while at Yale you are not. Thus, with Yale, you could compare financial aid packages next spring.

Oh my god…did you really use ■■■■■■■■ in an actual sentence? :frowning: With an attitude like that, I really wish both of those schools reject you.

Nevertheless, you have a great shot at both of them. But, like Cubsfan said, you should apply to Yale SCEA due to the non-binding agreement involved. But, if you apply to Columbia ED, you are pretty much forced to go there. But, would you need FA? If so, I strongly recommend Yale SCEA. Also, Columbia WOULD be a ‘safer’ option, since the acceptance rate is might higher than that of Yale’s. :)

Yea, ■■■■■■■■ takes less time to type than “mentally challenged” :P

Money isn’t an issue either

Columbia ED is safer. Neither are safe. But for an Asian applicant from NY, it’s tough to make yourself stand out, and ED is one of the few ways to increase your chances.
