I was wondering if anyone had any insight Yale vs. Dartmouth for a pre-med direction. I know premed is not so much a structured program as a set of requirements, but even so, how strong is their science, specifically biology and psychology, department? Which one would have better opportunities for research and volunteering/shadowing at a hospital?

D1 was premed and shadowed at the Y Med school, volunteered at the Haven Free Clinic, did a project at the hospital, and did other non-medical, but community related programs in New Haven. She was also funded by a Y grant to conduct a public health research project overseas one summer; between the grant and FA (Y gives the same % that you get during the school year), it pretty much covered everything.

Since she wasn’t a bio major, she took the premed minimum; didn’t take any psych.

D has the Med school, but Hanover is pretty small, not sure what else they have available, I’m sure the folks on the D forum can tell you what’s available.

Honestly, both schools are equally good platforms from which to approach medical school.

Yes, Yale may have more opportunities having a large medical center adjacent to it, but it also has way more premed students competing for them. I also think the basic premed science reqs are taught in smaller, somewhat more personalized formats at Dartmouth, than the Yale’s traditional style of large, competitive, strict bell curve classes (highly impersonal and somewhat stress producing.) At the end of the day, I think both of them have highly similar med school admissions rates.

Make your decision based on other factors, principally where you feel most at home when you visit.
