Yale vs. Notre Dame - Help me decide!

Well, the decisions are in, and I was fortunate enough to be accepted to many schools. My top choices are above - so, which do you think would be best for the majors in Computer Science or Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Finance, Economics, Political Science, or Molecular Biology? I'm leaning mostly Notre Dame and Yale.

Or should I say, adequate for the majors listed? I still want to enjoy the undergraduate experience with fun and extracurriculars, and there's always grad school to focus solely on academics. I'm not too into music and the fine arts, but I love sports - PLAYING them that is, although watching is fun, too. Hanging out, freedom, partying, girls, etc. will complete the undergrad experience for me I believe.

Also, I'm still undecided on the majors I'd like to pursue, but I know for a fact it will be a combination of business/science/engineering/polysci.

Here's my current opinion on the above:

Notre Dame:

Family legacy here

Awesome Sports Life / Spiritual Life

I'm from Chicago, so the atmosphere and culture are familiar

Mendoza College of Business is highly respected (though Yale seems more respected at places like Wallstreet according to wallstreet oasis, is this solely for Ivy namesake?)

Decent Engineering Programs

Offers a 5-year engineering MBA combo, which I could do in 4 thanks to AP credits

Geographically Closer

Larger Engineering department than Yale, newly renovated as well

Beautiful, enclosed campus. I've spent a lot of time visiting, including staying in dorms, and I love it here.

Conservative

Flexible on cross-department majors and AP credits accepted profusely

Yale:

Ivy Prestige

Amazing in Political Science, respected on Wallstreet for Finance

Unfortunately, not very strong for engineering and science

Top Tier recruited school for Wallstreet finance jobs

Really cool underground societies like the Skull and Bones (although these may just be cool to fantasize about, I don't know much about probability of becoming a member or practicality once in)

Many prestigious Alumni

Connections, connections, connections. I've been told before that undergrad is mostly about exploration academically and personally, and making the right connections. Is this a big factor here like I've heard?

Residential College system - seems pretty neat, on par or perhaps better than the ND dorm system

Large flexibility in course load and desired classes

I haven't visited yet, but I'll be there for Bulldog Days where many prospective students stay for a while and get the full experience

Damn, it's the Ivy League. People around me seem to think choosing Yale is a no-brainer, but I don't want to be influenced too much by just the name. Or should I listen to them? Will future job interviews go smoothly due to Yale's elite status alone?

Conservative parents were a little unsettled when they learned of Yale's infamous "Sex Week", though I would simply avoid it and act responsibly

Decent in Computer Science, though people claim too much theory is involved - HackYale seems to be a popular route to helping bolster the practical side of things

Is the East Coast truly full of preppy, silver spoon people? I'd like to think of myself as down-to-earth, and I'm by no means from a wealthy background. Will I experience culture shock? I'm not really the artsy type....

I would truly appreciate if any current students, alumni, or affiliated parents could help weigh-in on my decision! I will be visiting Yale in a few weeks as stated above, so that will help with my culture questions for sure, but anything else I'm fairly in the dark on here! I've done a ton of research for both schools!

Thanks guys and gals

I think clearly both are clearly great schools. Hopefully after you visit Yale you’ll get a better idea of what you think about it. Overall it might be better to think about the feel of the schools, they’re both great schools academically but which do you feel you mesh with the culture/vibe of better?

Yale. No-brainer. No disrespect to ND, a great school, but for your interests and goals it just can’t compete.

You seem more a better fit for ND.

Yale. Too hard to pass up an Ivy. People around you are right…it carries weight. I would not worry about the preppy reputation. The East Coast is extremely diverse and the Yale student body is made up of students from everywhere. Good luck.

Thank you all for the replies. I must’ve had notification off or something because I did not see them until today!

It may come down to my financial situation in the end, so we’ll see. I can totally see both sides of the argument here, which frankly makes the decision even harder! I think my family is pushing me ND, and I know I would love it there culture wise, but Cskitty is right. I don’t know how I can pass up an ivy!

I’ll get back to this after visiting. Thanks again.
