I'm an actor and I was planning on going to USC for their theatre program, but then I unexpectedly got into Yale. Yale is a great school and has a great theatre program, but it's much more liberal arts based than USCs. Also if I was at USC i could try and start working, but I've heard bad stuff about USC's theatre program, so I don't know. Please help!

Yale has the best theater scene in the country, hands-down. There are dozens of plays put on every weekend and unbelievable, unlimited resources. The associated Yale School of Drama is considered the best drama school in the world for any type of acting, production, dramaturgy or set design.

Send an email to a few of the Yale Dramatic Association (i.e., the Dramat, an undergraduate group that is the oldest and largest undergraduate theater company in the United States) members there, and they'll give you an appraisal of the current scene.

If it's not about $$, are you kidding?

Yale is an absolutely fantastic school, and in just about any other circumstance I would have to recommend Yale over USC - and that's coming from a Trojan. However, USC makes a compelling argument for itself in the realm of film. It is, without a doubt, the top film school in the country. The film school is building a new $100 million dollar building and the Trojan Network OWNS Hollywood. That could mean the difference between getting a chance at that big audition and being turned away at the door.

USC's Media Arts (film) program is absolutely head and shoulders above the rest.

Another consideration to make would be to attend Yale for undergrad and get your masters at USC. That would give you the best of both worlds, but it's a risky gamble. USC is becoming increasingly difficult to gain entrance to and has moved up in nearly every conceivable ranking - every year - for the past 15 years. In 4 years you may find that getting into the MA Film program is nearly impossible.

Yale has a world renown reputation. USC has the world's best film program and alumni network. In theory, the BA from Yale and the MA from USC is your best bet - but the MA program at USC is so competitive that's a huge gamble. If you have any doubt at all about wanting to be in the arts - then go to Yale. If you are certain you want to go into film (or if you want to stay in Southern California or if you want to have a great time in college or if you want the college sports experience) then USC is your best bet. USC is the Harvard (or Yale) of film and within the industry a USC film degree will get you farther - especially within the network. But again, any doubts at all about film, Yale is always going to be among the top 3 universities (generally speaking) in the world.

USC has a better football team.

im gonna disagree with the above

ummm
at least with film, its not the best
NYU and USC are the two debatable ones.

also
go to Yale if money isnt an issue

Yale vs. USC? Are you serious? USC is a nice school and all, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near the level of Yale....

Why are there postings about film when the OP is talking about theater? For theater there is no question: YALE.

Film - USC.

Theater - Yale.

If you aren't sure - Yale.

phear-me:

unfortunately, the OP will have nearly graduated before the Lucas center is up

Yale has produced many film stars as well. For technical aspects of film, maybe USC (although Yale has a well-funded film studies program now, too), but acting, Yale is still a better bet.

You can just say "yale" and elysian nymphs will shower radiant light upon you.

Theatre--Yale.

Seems pretty clear to me--Yale

Ummm....Yale. Not even close!

I wonder how kids who are smart enough to be admitted into Yale aren't smart enough to choose Yale?

YALE YALE YALE!!! I WISH I could go to Yale...I wish I had the luxury to choose, my god.

Go to Yale!

I have to assume that of every 100 people who choose to study theatre in college, maybe 90 ultimately wind up in other fields. USC will prepare you well for theatre, Yale will change your life (and also prepare you quite well for theatre). And you won't have to go through the rest of your life wondering what might have been.
