Yale Young Global Scholars - SPI Session

Hey! Just wanted to check out who applied to the SPI session at YYGS? When will we be notified of our acceptance?

i applied to the ple and gs

I applied to GS. I think I also would’ve liked PLE, but the dates coincided with dance nationals. I think we find out the first week of April. @blairwaldorf6321 I appreciate your username though, Blair was the best, mine is utterly uncreative.

I’ve applied to PLE and GS as well.

If you feel like sharing, what did you have in your applications, as far as GPA, SAT Scores, extra-curriculars, etc.?

Not really, but if others do, that would be sweet…

s/o to @isabel99, Blair Waldorf is queen. & nah, I don’t really want to share my application with everyone.

I haven’t heard one person apply to SPI. It seems like GS and PLE are the more popular programs.

Probably because SPI is new… Yeah, I’m not sure I want to share either, but I was just hoping someone else did since I want to know if I even stand a chance of getting in.

I think PLE is the more prestigious program.

Applied to spi…anyone hear back from them yet? Not sure if they are sending admissions in waves or all at once…feeling anxious but sorta know I got rejected >.<

April 1st is when they release admissions. I applied to PLE 1st, then GS 2nd. Still haven’t heard back.

It says they release admissions prior to April 1st. I’m also a little nervous but we’ll find out soon enough.

I am nervous as well. So far, I haven’t heard of anyone receiving their notification.

so i guess they arent sending out admissions in waves huh…ive been checking my email rather obsessively but really am not looking forward to it

since no one else is willing to do it ill just share my mediocre stats to get some closure for my doomed rejection
sat: 2100(taken in 8th grade) psat: 209 (taken last october as sophomore)
gpa: 4.18/4.3 weighted rank:21/902 aps: currently taking bio, stats, and world history
major awards: virtually none; ive won a thing here and there for art but thats about it
leadership positions: secretary of one club(orz…) nothing special

so my objective stats are obviously nothing amazing…and my subjectives are probably worse -.-

essays were alright, the first was rather generic(i wrote it the night before the deadline and the more i read it afterwards the more it sounded like begging) the second i was a little more happy with but there was hardly any time to edit…teacher recs were probably alright since i got along with both, but really doubt it was anything phenomenal

is anyone else a sophomore? or applied for fin aid? from what ive heard these are basically like anti hooks in the admissions process

Ok. I guess I’ll share also, since it was my idea.

I’m a sophomore.

SAT: 2210

GPA: 3.8 unweighted, 3.7 last year, 3.9 this year. Pretty low, unfortunately. I hope my choice of classes counter-balances it.

Class Rank: my school doesn’t calculate it but probably within the top 3 of 35.

Major Awards: 4th at Michigan Forensics States in Impromptu 9/10. Best delegate at Hope Invitational Model UN Conference. Verbal Commendation at Model UN of the University of Chicago. A bunch of 1-6ths at random invitational forensics tournaments. Also stuff from dance competitions, but it is probably irrelevant.

APs: Calculus AB (8th grade): 5, Calculus BC: 5, AP Physics C Mechanics: 4, AP Physics C Electricity and Magnetism: 3. I’m currently taking AP Biology, I plan on retaking the physics exam this year, and taking the AP US Government exam without taking the class.

Essays: The first one I thought was really compelling and I spend a lot of time on it. The second was shaky. I didn’t want to sound self-deprecating so in an effort to avoid that I’m afraid I came off as too confident or seemed like I was gloating.

Recommendations: Both probably really really good. I go to a small school and our class size is limited to 15 and is usually about 8. Both the teachers I asked have known me for over 4 years. The first was from my constitutional law teacher, who I think really likes me. He used to teach middle school model UN, which I really liked and won Best Delegate in at a high school conference in 8th grade. I also took one of his classes that was almost exclusively seniors in 8th grade and got an A, which I think impressed him seeing as he’s a really hard teacher and many of the seniors struggled with it. I think that recommendation will count slightly more because he went to Harvard Law. The other teacher I asked has had me in debate class since 7th grade. He runs our forensics program, which I’ve also done since 7th grade and am relatively good at. He also really likes me because I’ve gone to a lot of tournaments and am generally more committed to forensics than many of the other people on our team. I’m also one of the only ones doing a Public Address category.

I hope that they count extracurriculars and recommendations more than GPA, because that’s largely what I’m relying on. I think my SAT scores are pretty good also, I’m just worried about the GPA.

I just want to know if I got in. I’ve also been checking my email obsessively.

Good luck everyone!

I only have a 193 psat is that bad? I’m a sophomore

i think your essays and ecs will balance out your psat…jesus isabel99 your stats are killer…imho at least

agh so much anxiety >.< i was hoping theyd send something today but guess itll have to wait till monday

comment here when you hear back! I’m so nervous

don’t worry too much about standardized test scores. from the what I know, test scores can only keep you in but they can’t get you in.

Thanks mangoking.

I don’t think they count test scores as much as extracurriculars or essays since colleges usually don’t.

Well, we’re finding out on Monday or Tuesday (April 1) at the latest.
