Yale?

I'm wondering if there's any rivalry between Yale and Princeton. Do Princetonians feel any animosity towards Yale? Do they have an inferiority (or superiority) complex with regards to Yale? Or is there a lack of feeling towards Yale in general? Just curious.

I would hope the answer to the LAST question would be a resounding YES, except for big sports face-offs.

There's a very interesting part of the tour where there's a whole history behind the Princeton chapel and how a Yale graduate built it. There is a bulldog at the top of one of the gutters so that Yale could be "where it belongs, looking down at Princeton" but the Princeton response to that is that the Yale bulldog is where it should be, with its face in the gutter. I think it's something like that...someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I think in general, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton are all at odds with each other, but the main beef is really between Harvard and Yale. When I went to visit Princeton, they were selling T-shirts that said "What do Harvard and s*** have in common? They're both #2."

Yeah there are pretty big rivalries between the Big Three - Princeton, Harvard, and Yale. Other schools like Penn (and more recently Rutgers) have tried to establish sports rivalries, but they don't really spill over into the academic spectrum like Yale and Harvard obviously do.

virtuoso, why would you think Princetonians feel inferior to Yale?

I've heard things like if you walk around Yale with a Harvard sweatshirt, people will boo you or yell at you and same if you walk around Harvard with a Yale sweatshirt.

Though it isn't popular, if you walk around Princeton with a Yale or Harvard sweatshirt, people don't really care. They'll probably just think you got into professional/grad school there.

Anyway, at Princeton we dont really have a huge rivalry with Yale or Harvard. We just know we're better than them, and we stay quiet about it.

:)

from what I can tell Columbia and Princeton seemed to have an older rivalry, though not so much anymore. Not being a student at Princeton, I can't really say much more.

Actually I really like most Yalies, but their band is...odd (from the perspective of a Princeton bandie). Columbia and Princeton really don't have a rivalry because Columbia doesn't care about its sports at all, and Penn is just trying to get a rivalry with us but can't.

So IvyBoy is right. We know we're better, and thats all.

Hey virtuoso, aren't you going to Yale?

penn princeton is an athletic rivalry.
Princeton yale though? not so much
