I am a rising senior who would love to apply to Ivy league schools, but I am worried about the personalities. I understand that there will be snobby and pretentious students no matter what college I go to, but hoardes of pompous people make me want to gouge out my own eyes. What are your impressions of the people at yale?

Hey. I'm going to Yale next year and I have to say that, when I was applying, the thing that surprised me most about Yalies was that, as a whole, they weren't snobby at all (this isn't to say that you won't find people like that, but most aren't that way). While I'm not sure that you'll find such people at all Ivys (I certainly didn't), I think that you should definitely give Yale a chance. Hope that helps!

When I visited Yale for Bulldog Days I found that most of the people were very down-to-earth. The people that I spent the days with were amazing.

Can you possibly visit the campus in the fall? Visiting and taking a tour can help students decide which school has a good "personality fit."

That being said, I agree with the above posters. Yale students are a friendly, fun and down-to-earth bunch as a whole. I'm biased, however, as my kid attends Yale. :)

I applied to Yale on a whim, and much preferred the idea of going to a Columbia or Penn more. But I got into Yale, and decided to give it a real look - I was under the impression I would find snobs, etc. Instead, I found an extremely diverse group of very, very down-to-earth and friendly people. People are outwardly focused, and want everyone around them to have a good time. Also, it seems that a lot of Yalies are very extracurricularly driven and excited about activities outside the classroom. The generalizations about Yalies are definitely outdated. The people are the reason I decided to attend.

Great! thanks alot for all of your comments. I'm going to try to visit Yale before the summer ends.

Keep in mind that the kids you meet during the summer are not Yale students, by and large. They wiil be high school kids attending the summer programs. Depending on where you live, a short visit in the fall might be more valuable. A summer visit is better than no visit, but you won't be able to meet current students. School starts the first week of September. Perhaps you could go then, before your own HS is back in session.

Oh yeah, I suppose going in the fall would be a much better idea. I don't want to get the wrong impression of the students. Thanks!
