Year round school

Are you for it or against it?

All my classmates in American Schools have given me flak for it.
I support it, and say 10 weeks is a bit too much for a break.

hmmmm hmmmmm

I’ll have to vote against this.

Against. For those of us who take summer classes to try to advance ourselves, or otherwise concentrate on some field over summer, cutting the amount of time would mean most such activities would no longer be possible.

Against.

For sure.

Against. I agree with BindersOpen. Without summer, we wouldn’t be able to be exposed to other activities, and thus we wouldn’t know our true passions.

For, through 8th grade. Unsure about high school. Against in college.

For K-8, it is important that kids are constantly learning. A 3 month break is ridiculously too long for them.

In high school, I am torn. I say yes because the majority of kids don’t do anything in the summer and therefore should do year round schooling. But part of me says no because then they wouldn’t be able to do summer classes and enrichment programs like that. Perhaps there is a way to reconcile the two, but I’m unsure how.

Like Romani said, K-8 would be fine, HS, no.

i’m for it. taking fun classes and seeing my crush for 10 MORE WEEKS.

jk. I hate school and i have to go to summer camps. I’m totally against the idea.

I’m trying to think of ways to reconcile the two.
I honestly think you have schools end at the same time, and have a small break, like 3-6 weeks. I managed to do summer programs in hawaii while having this sort of break. We started in July for our year-round school. And ended in June.

Def. not for colleges.

K-8:
Summer - 4 Weeks. You can go to camps or vacations, but it’s not too long.
Fall - 1 week
Thanksgiving - 1 week
Winter - 2 weeks
Ski - 1 week
Spring - 1 week

:P

You guys do realize that year round schooling does not mean literally year round right? There are like six weeks school, 2 weeks off, or something along those lines. Usually a bigger gap sometime too- like 4 weeks.

MIT, I guess that is right. Most summer programs for HS are only 3-6 weeks, aren’t they? I’m used to college study abroad trips now :/

Against. In high school we already have so much stress for 9 months of the year; adding another three would just be too much. Besides some students do useful activities with their summers. I’d advocate for longer school days, but more breaks [like 2 months more  ]. Even in K-8, I think that it is even worse an idea to have year round schooling for them. Having to concentrate through all of that time would be a burden, and would probably not help them learn more.

How about normal school year + 2 weeks added on to each end with half days instead of full length days?

^^ Cool, they would be in school for the same amount of time (180 days or whatever). It would just be spaced out differently. That way, 1/2 of all the stuff you learned during the year wouldn’t be lost during 3 months of inactivity.

That’s a good idea. And yeah most are 3-6 weeks, unless they’re like full college terms for HS students.

I mean if possible, there could be options for summer programs and such.

Well, the reason I find these long summers useful is that they allow you to take on certain challenges that one wouldn’t be able to do during the school year. By cutting that time, students lose that opportunity to self-direct their education for a bit (and, as I’m sure you’ve seen on CC, students tend to learn a lot by themselves, e. g. self-studying).

For example, the summer before my freshman year, I mainly learned programming, and studied it intensely during summer so that I could enter AP computer science when school started. Had I not had that time to practice, I probably wouldn’t have been able to enter the class.

I hate this stupid bull about “Oh if I don’t have summer vacation, I can’t explore my PASHUUNZ that I DEFINITELY have even though I’m not even out of high school yet!” Puh-lease. Besides, with year round school the days would be shorter and you could pick up your passion after school. Plus, it’s been shown in studies that the IQ (or some other measure of problem-solving ability) drop during the summer time. It’d be nice if you didn’t have to lose everything you learned to a boring summer and have a very stressful time back in school trying to work up to your previous standard again.

/rant over

Personally I love summer. It’s the last vestige of childhood. I guess summer isn’t important to “mature” people, but I love fun. In summer, I get 3 months of it. Maybe a bit shorter, but I love it the way it is.

Let’s go with no, you idiots.

^ Do you have anything to support WHY as opposed to just calling those who don’t agree with you “idiots”?
