Possibility of year-round school

There is an article that was posted to my facebook from UMN parents that the university is considering year-round school - 3 semesters with short breaks, rather than the traditional summer off. Some in the article liked it (finish college quicker, little competition for winter internships etc.) and some did not. There was also the question on how scholarships would be affected. I have mixed feelings about this possible change - what do you think?
(Unfortunately I could not figure how to post the article here - sorry.)

It looks like it is something that President Kaler mentioned in an address. I don’t get the sense that people are jumping all over it. I have mixed feelings about it. Many kids need their summers to work, do internships, travel abroad, etc. I also don’t like the idea of students being rushed through school. On the other hand, my S would love to graduate in 3 years.

My D’s university will transition from quarters to semesters next year. It took at least 5 years of preparation to accomplish, so I wouldn’t expect any changes at the U of MN for a good long time.

It’s a horrible idea that really serves no purpose. Basically a solution in search of a problem.

Don’t fix what isn’t broken. I prefer to have summers off, it’s usually the only season with agreeable weather in MN…

I like the idea. I think three and a half months off is far too long and year-round school with shorter, more frequent breaks helps everyone get some rest and time off while still keeping a consistent routine. I can understand why some don’t like it possibly interfering with summer work opportunities though. For anyone who doesn’t want to attend school in summer, can’t they just opt to enroll only during fall and spring?

I suppose it’s kind of moot anyway since most of us will graduate before it would be implemented if it does happen.

President Kaler said it would be optional for students who want to finish early. Some professors are not in favor though.
