How many years of Calculus in college do I have to take for Pre-med?

Do I have to take both Calculus and Statistics?

If I am going to go to a med school, can I only take math in general one year only?

just curious,... and tell me any advice or things I need to know for college and for premed

Thank you so much :D

I think many/most med schools only expect one semester of Calculus and maybe one semester of stats. I think a few top SOMS want 2 semesters of Calc.

So, you won’t be taking “years” of calculus…lol

What is your major? Some majors require more math.

@mom2college What are some top SOMS that you know that requires 2 semesters of Calc? If you know any,
thanks

here’s a good place to look for information on med school and pre-med programs:

<a href=“Amherst College Guide for Premedical Students”>http://www3.amherst.edu/~sageorge/guide1.html

If calculus intimidates you, don’t plan on graduating from med school. There are a lot harder things in the med school process than learning calculus. Med school graduates should be the best and brightest. Yes, there’s more to being a good physician than calc, but being able to get a B in calc and orgo should be one of the criteria.

First, I want to clarify…all US MD schools are excellent.

I think only Harvard and UWash require 2 semesters of Calc.

My dad was an MD (retired). I once asked him how many times he used calculus as a doctor. Answer = 0!

It seems like most of the SOMs that require two semesters of math do not require that they both be calc. Can be calc and stats or ?

What is your major?

Ahhh, where to begin with that old saw? I’ll bet Hippocrates heard it from his students: “of what use, sir, is geometry to a physician?” Specious, specious logic, OP.

btw, did your father ever use geometry as a physician? how about that French he took?

oops…Wash U, not UWash. also Johns Hopkins requires 2 semesters of Calc.

more info…looks like all three will let you use AP Credits for Calc. WashU and JHU will let you sub stats for the second semester of calc. This is according to that Dartmouth link, but always check with the SOM.

you have to check the different med schools websites it will be different at a lot of them. many will accept AP credits for calc, often stats is just “recommended”
