Yes, another "help me choose" thread.

So, I've gotten into some great schools. CAS NYU (10,000 scholarship) and Rice (no money, but ends up being the same price) are the ones i'm torn between. I havent decided if i want to do biology or english, but i know all programs for biology are pretty strong everywhere. So, lets assume im going for english (journalism, editing)... i know i could get better internships in NY and whatnot... but the actual English programs in NYU compared to Rice, which is better (since money at these two places is about equal)? Thanks!

anyone? (bump)

No clue. I live in Texas. People here are pretty proud of Rice. I don't know much about Houston, though. I hear it's pretty cool. It's probably about as polluted as NYC (Smog, anyone?) and I know it's one of the fattest cities in the country. The food is supposed to be pretty good there. I'm going to guess and say the quality of academics is probably going to be better at Rice, though. Smaller classes and more attention. The College of Arts and Sciences at NYU is a great school. I got accepted, too, and I just don't know if it will be worth it. I got offers from small liberal arts colleges that gave more money and I'm really looking at them more. Really, it all depends on where you think your experience will be more enjoyable and you'll be more likely to succeed. Odds are, with your field, you're going to go to graduate school, and admission into a graduate school relies very little on where you go but very much on your college grades and scores on whatever standardized test you'd take (MCAT, GRE, etc).

that is great information. I def think i would enjoy the city more with NYU, and i've never been one to need the personal attention of small classes, so i've never considered that an important aspect of college (wierd right?), but i def was afraid that if i went to NYU, my education wouldnt be worth the fat money i have to put down for it...and im searching for validation, haha.

A bit OT, but...

Houston is actually more polluted than NYC-- in fact, I read somewhere that Houston is the most polluted city in North America. New York is one of the most environmentally friendly "big cities" in North America. I believe Toronto might even be ranked higher in terms of pollution. This is due in part to the fact that New Yorkers walk or use a lot of public transportation, and that many live in apartments where tenants share wall heating, etc.

That was your enviroFact of the day...

*--R

Both are solid schools, and you really can't go wrong with either one. For the record, Houston is MUCH more polluted than NY.

Ranisparkle, if you haven't done so, I would check out both schools and then make a decision. You might also want to consider the accelerated BA/MA programs at NYU which give you a masters degree faster and at less cost.

thanks for the advice, everyone!
