I believe an upward trend in grades really helps, especially since your guidance counselor will explain the circumstances surrounding the lower grades sophomore year.

Definitely apply. Your SAT conversion is 1430/2130 It looks like. Which is really good if you do get a 32 on the ACT. Which is higher than the school average. Keep up the good work. Make sure you do really well and apply ED to your dream school. Which may or may not be Cornell. Good Luck.

hmm you are an Underrepresented minority that has shown struggle...im sure you have a good chance because its not easy chugging through those circumstances

Really Really Really Really Really
Good chances. I cannot stress this enough. Yes, the GPA is low. But you are a URM, and that considerably boosts your GPA. On top of that, your ACT score is 32, which is very good, and is higher than the average scores they accept from most URMs (within my county a survey was conducted).

Grief within your family can always be used to your advantage. I mean it sounds bad, but when you consider it, you are turning something negative into something positive - your future. And I believe you have a chance at Cornell, if thats where you are applying. A very very strong chance. Just be sure to write good essays and get recommendations. If you need any help with essays and stuff, I would be willing to help.
