So, why is that a big deal? I’d see it a big deal if he wasn’t accepted.
That’s an interesting thought, @simom2two. He was accepted at 10/10.
@simon2two, it was hardly a given that he’d be accepted. And I am glad that he chose Yale.
@cttwenty15, I’m a proud parent of a Yale student, and am more partisan than the facts would warrant, but I think that we have to own up to the fact that being the child of a politician (or other celebrity) is a major hook. We have to “own” GWB, for example.
I’m sure that Dante will be a wonderful addition to Yale, and I’m glad that he chose Yale. He is a qualified student, but going 10 for 10 probably indicates that the hook was a big factor.
@IxnayBob, Fair enough, I agree.
I think he should have been admitted for his hair alone.
There must be some play on words relating frosh and fro, but I’ll leave that as homework for the class
ETA: my weak entry: Vote for Dante, he puts the fro back in frosh
^^ If Dante doesn’t change his hair style over the next 4 years, when he’s a senior he could be known as the FroCo fro!
Btw, it probably goes without saying, but if Dante or a friend is reading this, I figure that you’re accustomed to the ribbing about your hair, and want to be sure that there’s no question but that we are laughing WITH you. Welcome to Yale.
Colleges need a diversity. This is a well known fact, nobody’s keeping it a secret. So when a black kid with decent scores/resume applies, they fight for him/her. Dante had that, and on top of that his father is a public figure. Every college wants to be associated with big names. That’s why it was very much expected. I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve it. I’m saying the fact kids deserve it doesn’t guarantee them 10/10 on Ivys and the likes. Very far from that. Given everything equal, a white kid from a popular area has much smaller chances than a black kid. Dante is not only black, he’s biracial with a great story and a father- Mayor of a large city. Show me a white kid, mid-income family, with the same grades/scores and activities, who got into 10/10. THAN it would be a story.
Though in that case all it would say would be that the kid got very lucky!
@IxnayBob exactly.
In this particular case, I suspect the fact that he’s a good student whose dad is the mayor of NYC was enough. The fact that he’s also a URM is gravy.
By the way, I wasn’t joking about his hair–I genuinely think it’s awesome.
I’m sure next year the same will be said for Malia Obama. Despite the fact that she has two Ivy League educated, lawyer parents and attends the best private school in DC (which kills me to say since its my child’s major rival). So yeah, she will hit all the hooks: AA, female, college educated parents, legacy status at 3 Ivy League schools and, by the way, the freaking daughter of the President.
Knowing Yale as both an alum and a parent, I think he is a perfect fit for the school. We are happy to have him.
As the originator of this thread, I am still so happy to have him at Yale…and hope we are suite mates!
@cttwenty15 , the odds aren’t that good, but good luck! I’m sure he’d be an entertaining suite mate.
For malina Obama, her hook will be the daughter of a president. Race has nothing to do with it. Her options will be the same if she were white.
@cttwenty15 - saw Dante with his dad during move in over the weekend, just curious, do you get him as suite-mate?
What college?
