Yet another chance me thread, my apologies

I apologize to all those of you who see nothing on this forum but chance me threads, but I've been wondering for a long time if I stand a chance at all of Harvard. My issue, though, is that I plan on majoring in English; the majority of people I see on here tend to be math/science types so I've never really known what to compare myself to. I realize it's probably a long shot, but I figured what the hell; I'd rather give it a shot and see what happens than always have to wonder what if.

I'm not really sure what to put in here, and I know that it definitely depends a lot on showing them who you are as a person rather than just grades and scores (which I hopefully will be able to do) but I figured I'd just put down all those anyway and see how they fare.

I'll be a senior in a public Long Island high school this coming 2012-2013 year. As I said, I want to major in English, and then minor in psych on a pre-law track. I'm a caucasian female.

Rank: (as of end of sophomore year, they don't update ranks until a bit after the end of each school year so I don't know my junior year one yet) 4/224
Weighted GPA: (again, as of end of sophomore year, 100% sure it's gone up though) 103.71
Unweighted GPA: (sure to go up, because my lowest unweighted average for a junior year quarter was a 98.0) 96.63
Highest SAT I score: one sitting (second time) 2250, 750 CR, 700 M, 800 W, 10 essay
Highest SATIIs: (I think they ask for two? Correct me if I'm wrong, I dunno where I got this information from) 780 Lit, 780 USH, and if they ask for a third, 710 World
APs: As of right now I only have the 5 from World History sophomore year, but I'll have scores for AP Lang, AP psych, and APUSH by phone report Jul 1st, definitely got at least a 4 on all and I think a 5 for all is very possible.
Honors: NHS, Tri-M Music Honor Society, French Honor Society, probably national merit semifinalist/finalist (224 on the October PSAT and NY's cutoff is usually about 217)
Extracurriculars: Drama Club (president), Varsity lacrosse, Symphonic Band (flute), Marching Band (Drum Major), 2011-2012 MSG Varsity's The Challenge team for my school

And then extra stuff I'd mention would be that I'm the creator and head administrator of hungergamesrpg.com (first Hunger Games RPG ever, has been the largest and most active for 3 and a half years with almost 5000 members) and also that I've participated in and won NaNoWriMo for four years and have completed several novels.

So I know no one can say for definite, obviously, but based on that can I compete with other Harvard potentials? I'll probably update this thread once I get my final junior year stats all set, because unfortunately a lot of the scores are based on sophomore year.

Thank you all so much!

Let’s approach this chance thread a different way. Harvard rejects 19 out of every 20 applicants. So . . . why should they pick you over someone else? Yes, your stats are competitive, but WHAT ELSE do you have that that is special, unique, interesting and a “must have”? I’m sure you have something like that, but you haven’t posted it yet.

You want to be part of this group: [2,032 admitted to Class of ?16 | Harvard Gazette](2,032 admitted to Class of ’16 – Harvard Gazette), so you need to find a way to stand out from the crowd.

“This year’s applicant pool was remarkable by any standard in its academic and extracurricular excellence,” said Fitzsimmons. More than 14,000 scored 700 or above on the SAT critical reading test; 17,000 scored 700 or above on the SAT math test; 15,000 scored 700 or higher on the SAT writing test; and 3,800 were ranked first in their high school classes.

Extracurricular interests cited by students include music and other expressive and performing arts (41 percent); debate and political activities, including student government (35 percent); social service (21 percent); and writing and journalism (20 percent). In addition, 57 percent of the class expects to participate in recreational, intramural, or intercollegiate athletics."

Best of luck to you.

Yeah, I know, 's why I mentioned I’d have to show a lot more on the app than what I have on the thread, I was just wondering how all that puts me at this point/whether it’s a sound base/etc. Thank you, though^^

I’m surprised that out of an applicant pool of ~34,000 only half had >=700 on CR. I mean considering most people accepted have scores greater than or equal to 700, including hooked applicants, it seems that a lot of people just apply for the sake of it.

What we can take from this is that the acceptance rate is very deflated. And Harvard likes it that way.

As a parent whose son was accepted by Harvard (Early Action) this year, my advice is simple: apply and find out. My son attends an international school in London. We’re not wealthy and my son receives financial aid to attend high school. He had a 3.67 GPA and was accepted. Harvard accepted two other students in his class Early Action: neither were in the top 10% albeit both were minorities (like us). Harvard did NOT accept the valedictorian or salutatorian. So, try. Never second guess. We’re glad he applied as he has received a grant that covers literally everything, whereas NYU offered him awful financial aid

Alright, thank you! Yeah, I figured why not try and see what happens, might be surprised. Congrats to your son!

As I said before, apply. You have nothing to lose. And don’t be discouraged by people on this board. They are all candidates. People here told my son he had no chance. He proved them wrong.

I claim responsibility for 5000+. (:

Well at least partial responsibility haha. Good luck, Boss!

Your academics are great and you should certainly apply if you want to go. I’m not sure if your concern about being an English concentrator is justified. Harvard admits to the college, not the concentration. Once you’re there you can go into Engineering or English. I don’t believe they care. You are a qualified applicant. Your chances? No one can say. White female from over represented area without overly compelling ECs is your achilles heel.

Saph you are such a stalker xD And alright, thank you, sidelines!
