I really love Boston College, and I know my GPA is low but I thought my SAT would make up for it. Please tell me about my chances and any advice you guys have (:

I’m going to take a shot in the dark at this one. Obviously, none of us can truly predict if you’ll get in or not, but we can offer what we see/aren’t seeing.

First, I have a couple questions. Is the GPA unweighed or weighed, and how competitive is the school your in? Are your grades an upward trend, downward trend, or consistently the same? All three will affect the way admissions looks at your GPA.

Second, I think what makes you application so strong is your SATs (within the range for honors students) and the fact that you have been so successful on the AP tests despite being self-taught. Also, I like how you really stick with whatever activities you were involved with over a long period of time. That will set you apart from the dabblers. However, have you gotten any awards in volunteering or as a part of a club? Admissions like to see you excel at what you apply yourself to.

What I would recommend is a couple of things:
- Take your SAT II’s. I suggest taking them in the APs that you have studied most recently. So chemistry and math if you want to be a bio major (or premed) or chem and lit maybe if you’re undecided.
- Tease out any success from the summer programs. For example, one of the strongest activities I did was go to Cornell University summer college. I emphasized that I took two sophomore year courses and got B+'s. In addition, one of my professors recommended me. That extra initiative over the summer is exactly what colleges like to hear about. So, if you could perhaps really work those programs at Yale and Princeton, it might overcome the shortfalls of your GPA.

In conclusion, I think if you hustle to bring the grades up and get those SAT IIs done, I felt confident that you really do have a chance at BC. I hope this helps though being an admitted student does not suddenly endow me with superior admissions wisdom.
