Yet another chance thread...I'll chance back!!

Hi everyone! I'm a rising senior who is obviously starting to worry more and more about college as this process begins. I'd really appreciate it if you'd chance me for the following schools. Can you just tell me which are reaches, matches, and safeties along with any other feedback? Thanks in advance!

I don't know if this helps but I am an Indian girl (not international though), go to a very competitive high school in California, pretty well privileged (I'm not bragging just saying that I'm not going to be applying for financial aid anywhere), and my intended major is computer science.

I already know that the following are reaches: Cornell, CMU, UC Berkeley, USC, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, Dartmouth, MIT

The rest of my list: UT Austin, UIUC, UMich, UW Seattle, U of Wisconsin Madison, all the other UCs except for Riverside and Merced, Santa Clara, Harvey Mudd, Purdue, UNC Chapel Hill, Case Western, Tufts, Northwestern, WUSTL

I know that these are a lot of schools, but I'm visiting many schools this summer (hopefully that will help me shorten my list).

Ok now here is my profile:

9th grade courses:

Honors Physics A- / B+
English 1 B+ / A-
Study of Music A / A+
Speech and Debate A / A +
World History 1 A / A
Honors Algebra 2 A / A-

Summer between 9th and 10th: Honors Geometry A / A-

10th grade courses:

AP World History B+ / A- exam: 5
Honors English 2 A- / A-
Advanced Speech and Debate (not for credit)
Honors Precalculus A- / A-
Research A / A
Honors Chemistry A / A-

Summer between 10th and 11th: Advanced Programming (1 semester) A

11th grade courses:

AP Chemistry B+ / A- exam: 3 (don't know if I should submit this...)
AP Calculus AB A / A exam: 5
AP Computer Science A / A exam: 5
Honors English 3 A- / A-
Honors Biology A- / A
US History A- / A

GPA:

UW: 3.94
W: 4.19 (this is according to my school where we only get +0.5 for honors/AP classes instead of +1, so it is much higher according to how many universities calculate it)
I show an upward trend which is good, right?

SAT:

Subject Tests: Math 2 - 800; Chem - 760
ACT: 31 :( I know it's bad!! I'm retaking in September and have been getting 33/34ish on practice tests now so I'm pretty confident that I can bring it up.

Extracurriculars:

CTY (John's Hopkins Center for Talented Youth)
AP Scholar
Future Problem Solving (it is a club at many schools; I have a leadership position at my school - head mentor)
I have gone to the state championships 2 times and international championship once (at states I got fourth and then
first the following year. I got first at internationals)
Volunteering hours: ~150 as of now, hoping to get more in the summer
I am also part of a Scoliosis support group (I had corrective Scoliosis surgery before my freshman year).
Tutoring: I tutor middle school students in math. These are students from underprivileged families.

Research:
I did an internship at IBM last summer and am doing one this summer.
I did a research project in computer science in 10th grade (what I worked on during my research class) and submitted it to a science fair (although I didn't win anything, that still got me exposed to the field I want to go into).
I did a research project in CS in junior year as well and won an ACM (a very prestigious organization in CS) award at the science fair).
I am currently working on a project with a mentor at IBM and am going to present my work at a pretty well known conference in October.

9th grade - JV Swimming
10th and 11th grade - Varsity Lacrosse (planning to play next year as well)

Hopefully I didn't forget anything, but that's everything! Sorry in advance, I know that this is a really really long post, but I would be so grateful if you would help me! I'll chance you back if that's something you would like, so let me know!

Thanks and good luck to all of my fellow seniors! :)

I think you’re going to get into a great college! Your ACT is low for some schools, but it’s still pretty good, and you can make up for something like that with some fantastic essays. A lot of colleges review applicants holistically, so if everything else about you is great (and it appears to be) then they’re willing to somewhat overlook your ACT.

UT Austin - I’d say you’re probably going to get in. Nobody can ever say such a thing with certainty, but at the very least you’ve got a good shot.

UIUC - If you didn’t get in I’d actually be sort of shocked.

UMich - You have an okay chance. You’ll need to write some great essays to get in.

UW Seattle - You’re probably getting in.

Wisconsin - Pretty good chance.

I’ll leave it at that but even if some of these schools reject you you’re still going to get in one of them. You’ve listed a lot of good schools so in the end you’ll wind up somewhere great.

Chance me? - http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1666139-chance-me-w-m-uva-gettysburg-and-syracuse.html#latest</a></p>

Thanks for the chance @aspiringwmgirl‌ I’m hoping I can improve that ACT score in September!!

Thanks for the chance!
JHU you actually have a pretty good chance at cuz they give special preference to CTY people! Match/ low reach
CMU, UC Berkeley, USC, Dartmouth- low reaches
Cornell, UCLA, Dartmouth, MIT- high reaches
UT Austin - match
UIUC -safety
UMich - match
UW Seattle -match
Wisconsin -match
case western- match
northwestern- low reach
Purdue- match/low reach
Tufts- match
the other ones I dont know well enough to make an educated chance, sorry!
Fix up the ACT and take one more SAT2 (JHU recommends 3)
Your ECs look good and GPA should be fine!

Your stats are great! I agree with retaking the ACT, but it’s not a huge deal.

I’m not familiar with most of the schools on your non-reach list, but your research experience is impressive! Consider asking for a recommendation from one of your mentors just in case.

UT Austin: match
UNC CH: I’d have to say high match/low reach because you’re out of state, but still a good chance!
Tufts: low reach
Northwestern: high match/low reach
WUSTL: high match/low reach

Also applying ED is a good idea for you (I’m sure you’ve already thought about it  ), especially because money won’t be a deciding factor.

Good luck!

(Laxers represent!)

ACT is good enough! Would try to get it to a 33 though if possible, otherwise your all good!

CMU, UC Berkeley, USC, Dartmouth- minor reach
Cornell, UCLA, Dartmouth, MIT- reaches
UT Austin - match
UIUC - likely
UMich - match
UW Seattle -match
Wisconsin - likely
case western- match
northwestern- minor reach
Purdue- likely
Tufts- match

Chance me: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1667265-chance-me-will-chance-back.html#latest</a></p>

bump please chance me! I’ll chance back!

Although your ACT is good, it isn’t remarkable considering that the public schools where you’re applying have highly competitive EE/CS departments (especially UDub). For example, the 25th-75th ACT percentile for UIUC engineering students is 31 - 34. Even if you’re qualified for most of these schools (and overqualified for some), the holistic admissions process is incredibly random. I would suggest looking into applying to UCR via “guaranteed admission” as a definite safety in case you have absolutely terrible luck.

Did you take the ACT with Writing? What are your subscores? (the most important thing here is a high M)

Assuming that you’re applying to Engineering departments for CS (not L&S/LSA/whatever the college calls its College of Arts and Science ):

CMU SCS: High reach for everyone
Harvey Mudd: High reach (it’s pretty self-selective)
MIT: High reach for everyone
UC Berkeley EECS: High reach for everyone
Cornell: Reach
Dartmouth: Reach
Johns Hopkins: Reach (barely above the 25th percentile)
Northwestern: Reach (at the 25th percentile)
UDub: Reach
WUSTL: Reach (better chances if you exhibit interest; but your ACT is below the overall 25th percentile)
UNC-CH Low reach (I can’t remember if they have to have a certain percent of in-state students)
UCLA: Low reach
UT-Austin: Low reach (I’m guessing that a large portion of the class will be auto-admit students; I could be wrong)
Case Western: Match
UCSD: Match
Other UCs: Matches-low matches-POSSIBLE safeties
Purdue: Match (possibly low match-safety)
Santa Clara: Low match (don’t know much about it)

Tufts: ??? (does “Tufts Syndrome” still exist? I can’t find its CDS)
Don’t know enough about USC or UW-M to chance them, sorry.

These chances are based on purely hard stats (ACT, GPA, etc.) and not intangibles like ECs or essays. Improve that ACT to your projection and your chances improve greatly :)

One other thing—your list doesn’t seem cohesive. You have giant publics mixed with Harvey Mudd/Dartmouth. I’d encourage you to think about why you want to attend these schools BEFORE you spend all that money on airfare/the like ;)

Edit: I just saw your SAT score. Consider sending that in. 800+630 (M+CR) is better than your current 31.

What is your yearly income? No one will judge you.

Where is your home state and what is your intended major?

@billcsho‌ She says she goes to high school in California and wants to major in CS.

All you really need to do is get ACT up. 33+ will give a legitament shot at those top tier colleges you said were reaches and should match you up solid for every other college. I agree with @loquatical on chances. If u get 33+ and write good essays you’ll end up at one of the top colleges. Have you considered SAT I? Good luck!

And chance back? http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1667312-chance-me-please-top-tier-colleges.html</a></p>

@loquatical Thank you for pointing it out. It is hard to find info in a long post.
In that case, I don’t think the chance at Berkeley or UCLA would be any lower than UMich or UIUC. For the latter 2 as oos applicant, the chance for Engineering school is a bit low with ACT at 31 which is the bottom of mid 50 (including both in state and oos). For UMich, there are around 40% oos students while for UIUC around 24%. The chance to get into these 2 engineering schools from oos is not better than getting into UCLA/UCB in state. Also, they do not meet need for oos students. Nevertheless, you can major in CS at UMich LSA which is a bit easier to get into with mid 50 ACT 30-33 this year.
UW-Madison should be a match while Northwestern is a reach.
Purdue is a match.

Hi, everyone. I go to school in Florida, I really want to go to USC. I had a 2.5 high school GPA, and my SAT scores were low (1520). I was not really dedicated in high school. I was involved in theatre alot in high school. But then I went to community college-- I have completed 60 credits from there with a 3.7 GPA. I am in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor society.
I am heavily interested in the School of Dramatic Arts- BA program. I want to apply for the Fall 2015. Does anyone think I have a chance as a transfer student?

@theatregeek20 Start your own thread. Don’t hijack others. Also, specify which USC you mean in your own thread.

@AnnieBeats if you want to know about my yearly income I guess you could message me personally, but I don’t want to share that on this thread. Regardless, it isn’t that relevant now is it? I’m just saying that I’m not a FA candidate…

@loquatical‌ Thank you so much for taking the time to write a thorough post! I am spending this summer on the ACT and have actually improved significantly since I took the actual test (I am getting in the 34-35 range on all practice tests now, so hopefully I can repeat this on the actual test in September). I was very surprised to get a 31 actually. I feel like it was not my best effort and I tend to have really bad test anxiety so I am hoping for a significant improvement this time around. Hopefully that will improve my chance of getting into some of my desired schools

@AlwaysBorderline‌ thanks for the feedback! I tried the SAT 1 but I feel like I’m not going to be able to improve my score (compared to the ACT). Hopefully I can get at least in the 33-35 range!

@billcsho thanks for the feedback! Looks like I just need to bring up that ACT score which I am really determined to do! Hopefully I will improve upon that 31…

@billcsho so sorry, i’m new here! :(
